If the human race had their emotions taken away

Which is really odd, in my opinion, because what actually separates us is the ability to use logic.

You also left out one other reason to say that: the ability to justify eating animals without feeling guilty for causing them pain.

People that say animals have no emotions are merely jealous that their dog not only is far more emotional than they are, but also that it’s far more intelligent :D.
Okay, guys, don’t you think this thread may have gotten a little out of hand? Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like everybody’s getting worked up over a totally fictional subject. There are no Vulcans…I’m sorry to break the news to you :). Also, there is a very good reason that we have emotions, something tells me that without them, we’d be in a great big world of shit (and that could be literal :D).

OK, let’s see. Getting back on track. This will be slightly long and probably over-simplistic, but here’s how I’m thinking part of the day would go for somebody who loses their emotions.

You’re in bed, asleep, and somebody turns off your emotions. I’m not sure how that would effect the dream that you’re having.
The alarm goes off. You wake up. You have to pee. Because it’s become routine, or like a ritual, you might automatically get up and go to the bathroom instead of just going where you lay.
Now you’re done and you feel hungry. Instinct might kick in and you go have some breakfast.
After that, although you need to shower, get dressed, and go to work or else you won’t be able to pay your bills and eventually you’ll lose your house and maybe your car, if it’s not paid for, none of that bothers you, so you have no motivation to do anything after eating breakfast. So getting ready and going to work will need to be programmed into you.
Of course, when you go to get dressed, since you no longer care what anybody thinks of you, and you don’t care how you look, fashion sense no longer exists. You just grab any old shirt, pants or skirt, socks, shoes and put them on. Do they all match or go together? Who cares.
And finally, you drive to work. You will need to be programmed to follow the rules of the road. Follow the speed limit, don’t tailgate, follow all traffic lights and signs, try not to hit pedestrians, break and/or swerve if you’re about to crash, etc…

It might be an interesting thought experiment if you imagine that one emotion at a time is taken away, and what happens then.

OK, I’ll start with curiosity. Hmmm, I don’t care about any of this anymore.

You might have to pick another trait; I watched a documentary about dogs the other day wherein a dog was trained to recognize several hundred objects. You tell it to “fetch crawley” and it would go get the stuffed spider and bring it back to you. To test the dog they threw out several of his toys and added a small stuffed Charles Darwin doll, which the dog had never seen before. When told to “Fetch Darwin”, the dog ran to the pile of toys and after appearing to consider the problem he selected the one toy he did not recognize and fetched it back. How did he know to bring back that toy unless he logically deduced that the one required was the one he did not know?

Well, if you remove “empathy” you wind up with a psychopath. They cannot identify with the thoughts and emotions of others, nor do they care. The dumb ones become criminals, mass-murders and gangsters. The smart ones become CEOs, lawyers and politicians.

(God help us all, I wish that last sentence was a joke.) :frowning:

[hijack]Although I’ve had some nice bosses, a lot of the time it seems it’s the a**holes who get promoted to management.[/hijack]

Any good videos with cold blooded animals showing emotion? Not that I doubt it but I wonder how far their emotions go compared to mammals…

Can we separate emotions and instincts or are emotions instincts? How far off is hunger from being an emotion? You do feel hunger, correct?

I’d say without emotion, we would be lifeless and if emotions were taken from us we would die. Unless whoever took our emotions were controlling us, then we would be robots but hopefully whoever took control likes to feed us and change our diapers… They would probably get fed up and change us back or let us die…

Then again, I could just be confusing myself… Stupid emotions

Off-Topic - Trying to picture non-existence hurts my head

Whenever I try all I can do is picture total darkness and silence.

Back on topic, there are lots of creatures that I don’t think have emotions, but they do what they need to, to survive. Granted, they’re primitive creatures, but still.

But then that means darkness and silence would have to exist and that can’t be right. I remember a few tv cartoons where when they try to express non-existence (by reversing time), they always use a white screen which seems odd because you would expect a black screen. I wonder why they use white.

Darkness is the absence of light. Silence is the absence of sound.

I don’t know.
