If the music from years ago are "oldies", then what will we call the music of today?

I didn’t think this was a valid question to plop down in the Questions forum, so here it is. Will that other music still be called “oldies”, or will IT’S name change? Will it ALL just be grouped as such?

I’m weird, forgive me.

I’ve always thought of 50’s/early 60s as oldies. Late 60s/70s as classic rock, and 80s as retro.

But I have no idea what 90s-present music will eventually be called. Good question.

Newdies.

Same thing it is now: Crap.

It will be called “oldies,” but that will be defined as “Hits of the '90s! Oughts! Tens!”

When I was a child, the oldies station my mother listened to played mostly songs of the '50s. The oldies station I listen to plays mostly songs of the '70s, though they are creeping into the early '80s.

Eventually anyone who listens to or remembers what we currently call “oldies” will die off and the music will vanish for all but the most obsessed of fans, and the music of today will become “oldies.” Then someone will start this thread all over again.

Agreed. I am already hearing music I grew up with in the 70’s and 80’s on some of the “oldies” stations.

Notice it’s hard to find a station now that specializes in Sinatra and the Andrews Sisters. That’s because the fans are dying off at a tremendous rate now, especially if you only count Sinatra’s early, skinny-guy career.
