IF The USA became a Fascist Dictatorship how would the flag look?

The flag would look the same as it does now and the country would have the same name. Welcome to our fascist dictatorship.

I don’t think I’m exaggerating TOO much…

That’s where Islam and homosexuality come in. The Muslims would be the threat to the nations’ security and culture; the gays to the family and all things moral.

The only difference is that during the 1930s and 1940s, there were only about 18,000,000 Jews on the planet. There’s 70 times as many Muslims.

Maybe a field of 50 crosses? 50 Jesus silhouettes?

As for the diversity of opinion in this country, considering what the current administration can get away with, I’m convinced they could initiate “disappearings” without much of a fuss.

Definitely, definitely this.

That would be absolutly wicked. I’d vote for that flag anyday.

Gahan Wilson did a classic cartoon of Hitler and his lieutenants in a balcony watching a parade, with lots of banners and armbands, all the swastikas replaced with smileys.

I certainly think the smiley face would go a long way towards restoring America’s credibility and trustworthiness with the nations of the free world.

mm

I don’t see how you can say this. I don’t know what your definition of a theocracy is but it must certainly be different from the accepted definition. How many theocracies have FREEDOM OF RELIGION explicitly written into their constitutions?

And I’ve been told China has free speech written into it’s Constitution. With no follow through, it’s just words.

There’s a fucking follow through. When was the last time someone was arrested in America just because of their religion? “Under God” got taken OUT of the Pledge of Allegiance. Prayer is not allowed in public schools. Man, how can you really believe your own rhetoric?

I’m sorry if I’m getting angry but after reading about people being hanged for the “crime” of homosexuality in Muslim countries, it’s completely impossible for me to sit still when someone accuses America of being a “theocracy.” This rhetoric is empty and meaningless.

I thought it had been added during the McCarthy era, and some atheistic types had tried recently to get it removed, but got shot down. Or did I miss this development while I was off the boards (most of 2005?)

I’d say IMO the US is far from being a theocracy, but is de facto way more religious than other western countries - even us hypocritical Brits who have an established state religion, that most of us ignore.

Remind me, when did that happen?

Really? You sure about that? As sure as you are about the pledge?

CMC fnord!

Okay, I was wrong about the Pledge being changed. I don’t know why I thought that. Still, though, that doesn’t make America a theocracy. I know Bush said something once about being guided by God, and yes, it was stupid. But Bush is not the only one in charge. There is also Dick Cheney and Don Rumsfeld, neither of whom are known to be religious fanatics. John Ashcroft was definitely a fanatic Christian hardliner but he is gone now, replaced by Gonzales who as far as I know is modest about his religious affiliation. And there are Dick Cheney and Paul Wolfowitz, who are both Jewish.

I think everyone in the Bush white house would convert to Islam if doing so would enrich their big business interests.

Cheney’s not Jewish and Wolfowitz isn’t there anymore.

Dammit, I meant to say Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz. Even if they are gone they played a big role in the first term. Moreover they symbolize the pro-Israel neocon movement, which few would deny is an important component of this administration.

I know Cheney’s not Jewish (I think he’s Methodist.)

Actually I kind of agree with you. I just wanted to be the dick to put out the obvious.

IF Bush did such a thing I would thing the flag would be that of the Anti-Christ, and all you lefties would be accepting of that and have that tatooed right next tot he mark of the beast chip implant :stuck_out_tongue:

Ahem. I said “most of it’s history”, not right now, although it’s headed back that way. As pointed out, kids are still forced to say “God” in the pledge, and prayer is most certainly allowed in public scholls. They just haven’t been able to go back to imposing it by force, yet. To a fundie, “not allowed to use force” = forbidden.

So did the Soviet Union.

Whoa, whoa… easy, dudes… the questioning is “what if”, Argent Towers. And let it be said, that “it couldn’t happen here” is one dangerous assumption.

However, the Christian Dominionists are unlikely candidates to seize power, realistically. If anything, the “christian” flavour would be a sop, window dressing to assume some “morality” for the engineers of the fall of American liberty, who would more likely clothe themselves in the mantle of the populist-nationalist who’ll protect us from evil outsiders, while ensuring that the stock prices will continue to rise.

However, Der, I should propose that the succesful fascistation of the American state could not be assembled upon that kind of ruthless indiscriminate mass violence. Rather it would be targeted force, taking out potentially troublesome segments of society while letting those who submit go on with their lives. Neither the Soviet Union nor China nor North Korea has adopted “if a city rebels, nuke it”; that policy would lead to a massive breakdown in a relatively short time. And in any case, it’s not a question of “a city” rebelling, it’s about segments of society across various cities and states not cooperating. What you want is to seduce or cow the people across the board to a sufficient degree that they will be the ones to enforce your rule against their neighbors. And for that, being able to still use the emotional symbol of the old flag would be of great value. Hell, even keep the same Constitution and just add an amendment expanding the definition of “treason” – the proles will not read further than the old preamble anyway, and the dictator is surely “ensuring domestic tranquility”…
… isn’t he…?
