IMHO, Pathfinder is a waste of time. Lots of pointless violence, very shallow characters, and while I’m unsure of this part of early European/Native American interaction, I’d bet the writers have taken a lot of liberties.
Some random thoughts I had during the film:
*Is that CGI blood splatter?
He dies. She dies. They all die.
Yep. I was right.
Just what we need, more dead bodies!*
*Sex scene? No? Damn. * (I usually don’t like gratuitous sex, but a break from the limbs and animated blood would have been nice. Also, this was the only surprise in the whole film.)
*Deep meaning-full moment.
Where are these bad guys coming from?
Ok, why did you develop this character if you’re going to just get rid of him?
Are we done yet? No? Damn.
Credits. Yeah!!! *
Mouse_Spouse picked this movie and GhostRider. I love him, just not his taste in flicks. The next torment: Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Codpiece.
When I first saw the previews for that, I thought of two things the writers could have done to make me want to go.
Set it in a slightly alternate reality, on the Californian coast, with the Chinese. They got to Australia, why not America? (I remember seeing a documentary on the History Channel about this…I think. If I’m wrong please fight my ignorance)
Pull an Apocalypto, and have the characters speak their native language.
Eh, $5 saved.
There’s no sex scene and trust me, the violence is not as interesting as it sounds. The story is extremely cliched (Vikings invade “North America” and kill noble indians. Viking baby gets left behind. Baby grows up. Vikings come back. Will Viking boy go back to them or will he defend the noble Indians? There is fighting. The end), and the violence, while bloody at times, is dull as dishwater. The look of the picture is very drab and washed out. The lead actor is a block of wood. There are no interesting characters. There is no real information about the period or even very clear information about the geography. This movie sucks. It doesn’t even suck in a cheesy way or a “so-bad-it’s-good” way. It just sucks in a boring way. If you were watching it on cable, you’d start flipping the channels ten minutes into it. This movie is a waste of celluloid which could have been turned into perfectly good guitar picks.
Believe me, the trailer was enough to keep me away. The Norse encountered Vineland around 1000 AD. The trailer starts, “Six hundred years before Columbus. . .” and then it just gets stupider.
I like how, after 300 hit it big, suddenly I see trailers for this movie with a voiceover saying “Contains scenes of brutal violence”. My guess is that they added even more CGI blood to it, as well.
For shame, really - the original Pathfinder is perhaps the best action flick ever made in Norway. This new version was supposedly based remotely on the old one, but I fail to see how based on the descriptions.
