It’s a seperate nation, but to they have their own prison system? I’m sure they don’t have the death penalty being Catholic, but what if someone burned down the Cistene Chapel or something? Would they be extradited to Italy or held for life in Vatican city?
Ask the guy who tried to kill Pope John Paul II. He’s in prison in Italy.
The Vatican has a treaty with Italy to handle the unpleasant stuff. Like being attacked by armies and stuff like that.
According to Article 22 of the Lateran Treaty (1929) establishing the sovereign right of Vatican City:
Article 22
At the request of the Holy See, or by its delegate who may be appointed in single cases or permanently, Italy shall provide within her for the punishment of offences committed within the Vatican City, save and except when the author of the offence shall have taken refuge in Italian territory, in which event he shall immediately be proceeded against according to the provisions of the Italian laws.
