If you could be the world's best at any sports position..........

…what would it be?
I’d say either striker or goalkeeper in soccer. Or maybe free safety in football.

MLB closer. Like lights-out 25-30 saves a year closer.

MLB third baseman. I’d have the strongest arm ever. And I’d be the answer to half of the trivia questions that start “What MLB third baseman…” (otherwise - Brooks Robinson)

I’ll be the third of three responders to pick an MLB player…a starting pitcher in my case. They can make it nearly impossible for the opponent to score more than one or two runs, and they only have to pitch every fifth game. Being a great NFLer would still blow. There is to much of a chance of getting your brain smashed in.

Golfer. Not only would I make tons of money, I wouldn’t be at risk of serious injury and I could be competitive into my sixties.

Is that answer cheating?

No, in fact it’s probably one of the best possible answers.

Either NBA point guard or holding midfielder in soccer.

I’d like to occupy the playmaker role in football. It isn’t a tightly defined role, not really possible to specify exactly what it is but those who know the sport know exactly what it is when they see it.

Think…Cruyff, Charlton, Kaka, Gerrard, Ozil…that’s the sort of player. Certainly they score great goals and that is an attraction, but when I play myself I get immense pleasure from being the one who sees the opportunity and either playing the right passes to set it in motion or creating the run or space that makes the opportunity obvious to everyone else, then everything slots into place and a goal is scored, whether by me or someone else doesn’t matter.

Would have to be Striker / Attacking midfielder in soccer. Just look at the current incumbents, mucho cash plus mucho glory / adulation.

The top goalkeepers, defenders etc not as acclaimed it seems

Me too, except more saves per season. Upon retirement, Mariano Rivera would be quoted as saying “all hail the new king of closers.”

(I assume this includes some kind of time/age travel, because at my age the only thing I could possibly be even competitive at is golf. And golf sucks).

I’d love to get paid to play hoops all day, and if I was a point guard, I’d be in the thick of the fun action all the time and wouldn’t need to shop only at extra-tall shops, custom furniture makers, etc. Then again, as a soccer forward I’d get to be outside more of the time. And more international travel, but no real off-season. Plus probably have to move to Europe to get max money. Then again, living in Barcelona for a few years, then moving back to MLS for the late stage of my career doesn’t sound too bad…

In terms of making big bucks and staying relatively healthy, being the world’s best shortstop could make you a very, very rich person.

I’ll also answer with attacking midfielder/playmaker in soccer. As a bonus, being an American, being the world’s best AM would result in some very funny reactions ;).

:smack: I started out with starting pitcher and then changed it to closer but forgot to update the numbers! Yeah, make that 50+ saves per season.

That was going to be my answer, until I saw “golfer.” That would be a great career.

Singles tennis, maybe doubles.

Love the sport, would enjoy the tour, could retire whenever I like and chill out.

My answer too.

There is a very low possibility of someone smashing into you - US Football, non-US football, ice hockey, basketball, baseball, rugby, lacrosse, field hockey, (I’m sure I’m missing some…Synchronized Swimming?)

In addition you don’t have to deal with a coach or team owner.

Is it supposed to have anything whatsoever to do with skills and talents I actually possess? Or are you just being a magic genii and I get to select a sports position and instantly get the requisite skills to be the world’s best at it?

I’m not much of a sports person but I think it would be cool to be fantastically excellent at kicking field goals and extra points in football. OK, my team has the ball. Minimum 3 points on each possession unless they fumble it away, let them try to make a touchdown and if they can’t, I come on and kick the field goal. From anywhere on the field.

First choice would be professional bowler. Being the very best would allow me to become a millionaire while still enjoying relative anonymity (most of my non-bowling friends couldn’t name three professional bowlers even if their lives were on the line).

Second choice would be left-fielder. I think I’d hate traveling that much, but I love the game, and being the best at any position in baseball ensures being set up for life financially.

And that would be my third choice, for the exact reasons cited. Not to mention the prize money.
