FWIW I bought Starfish on vinyl when it came out. I happened to hear “Under the Milky Way Tonight” on the radio one afternoon, as I was sitting in my car waiting my turn for a car wash, and was blown away. I loved the guitar-cum-bagpipe sound.
I should probably seek this out on CD or iTunes, because it was a really good album, that none of my peers had even heard of.
I think I’d kill myself. Or stop listening to music. One of the issues I had with The Bestest Boyfriend was that getting him to listen to anything but Metallica involved chaining him down…
My playlist just jumped from a romantic duet between María Dolores Pradera and Joaquín Sabina to The Wall; I’m not what you’d call a single-group-listener.
Even if you confine it to albums with his name on it, or bands he’s led like Utopia, he has such a huge and varied catalog that boredom would take a while to set in. As much as I love Kate Bush, she just was not productive enough.
Probably Massive Attack. Their variety of guest vocalists would keep things from getting too boring. They’ve not produced a lot of music over the years, though. If not them, Mike Patton. He’s always interesting and attention-grabbing. If not him, Radiohead. They’ve a quiver full of fantastic songs with eclectic instrumentation and moods.
This is harder than any “desert island disc” list…
I would have to pick Pearl Jam, as (of the groups that most influenced my musical taste) they not only have the most music of these bands, but are also still making music.
Mark Knopfler. Dire Straits, the soundtracks to Princess Bride and Local Hero, lots of work.
Scott Hamilton might be my second pick, lots of frontman stuff, a very nice album backing up Maxine Waters, among others. Maybe Brubeck, though.
I could listen to the Pixies exclusively with little problem. The only other choice would be the Beastie Boys, because I will never tire of listening to Paul’s Boutique.
