If You Could Pick An Era to Live In

Take me back to the times of castles and dragons, wizards and sorcerers. Where is my knight in shining armour?

I really try to be good but it just isn’t in my nature!

I would choose the old west, circa 1890.
I figure I was already there in a previous life, and ran a bordello for outlaws.

I’d like to visit the library at Alexandria
Bethlehem in the reign of Herod the Great.
Italy, before the Plague.
Pre-Revolution France
Imperial France
Russia during the last days of the Czar
The resistance during WWII

I’m not a fallen angel, I’m a risen demon.

I thought you looked familiar, Kelli.

It’s me, Ringo.

What’s the new girl’s name?

Angkins, huh? Send her up.

Voted as the poster you’d most like to meet.

Please don’t tell me why.

I’ve always wanted to live in Alabama in the 1950s because that was the decade that my dad was a teenager. He tells wonderful stories about that carefree time and although he hasn’t lived in the deep south for over thirty-five years, his mesmerizing southern drawl comes right back.

I would have loved to have known my father back then.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted, then used against you.

With love from the poster voted as having the "Most Confusing Username"

The Roaring 20’s. Bootlegging, anyone? Or picking up a copy 0f “Doc Savage:Man of Bronze”. Maybe “Weird Tales”?
Also, the chance to shoot Hitler before the trouble started…

It matters not whether you win or lose; what matters is whether I win or lose.

:: Angkins struts in in her red bustier and garter ::

Wally…honey … you are looking mighty fine in them chaps.
Come over here and show me your…gun…
::grabs a beer and a shot of whisky at the bar…downs the whiskey and hands Wally the beer::

Let’s paint this ghost town red Ringo…Kelli, don’t wait up.

Any connection between your reality and mine is purely coincidental.

I have had a lifelong, endless fascination with three different times and places, thru books and movies - if I believed in past lives, I think I would have been alive back then:

  1. England, Middle Ages, lady of the castle. I’d wear one of those big headdresses, I’d be married to a knight and the cook would serve gilded peacock at my formal affairs. I would work on my tapestry when I wasn’t out training my falcon or watching some jousting.
  2. London, about the time of King Charles but before the Great Fire or the plague. I would wear elaborate low cut satin gowns, paint my face white and stick on little heart shaped patches, be followed around by the town dandies much as Madonna is today, and be loud, coarse, and rude as was expected of a person of my station;
  3. Leaving St. Louis, Missouri on a wagon train in the 1800’s for California, jettisoning my hope chest half way there, praying we will reach the Donner Pass before any chance of snow…

Of course, I would be one of the rich and elite in these past eras, and I would not want to suffer from any diseases. The well-off have always made out better than the poor peasants in any era, from Roman times to the Reagan era. Even if they only lived to age 30 back then, I think people were just as happy with life as we are today (generally speaking).

You want to witness my birth?

I’d like to to back to the late 1960’s, early 1970’s, so I could see what it was like for my parents when they were my age.

Me? I’d go back in time just before people started to realize how nifty of an idea a writing system could be, and give them some of my own invented scripts. I would also leave my name all over everything, so I would be sure to get credit for it.

I myself am an incorrigible conlang slut. I love oral lex.

I have to agree with Shirley here - Regency England would be the place for me. I read a couple of books recently on time travel and they had historians that would go back and study certain periods in time. That’s what I would really like to do. Go back and experience it all, then come back and record my observations and then on to the next place. What an exciting life to envision.

I rode Omni in Springfield, IL

A place like ancient Egypt or Peru or Mesoamerica during the flouresence of their cultures.
I think that Peru would probably be the most interesting, they had huge public engineering works including aquaducts and an advanced road system. When you consider that they didn’t use a written language, it would be fascinating to see how they got everything accomplished.

“He love people, all of them, washed and unwashed; he loves his wretched pack of sponging relatives. He shoots people, arrests people, but he doesn’t like it.”

Assuming I had no choice (I like the era in which I do live):

  1. Whenever humanity has developed fast (FTL), peaceful interstellar colonization & exploration. I would love to explore space.

Assuming I cannot choose the future:

  1. Feudal Japan circa 1500-1600. Assuming I would be equipped with knowledge of the language, cultural taboos of the time, and Japanese appearance. I think I would make a good samurai.

  2. Assuming I would have to be me without little actual changes (i.e. I, as a foreigner, would never be accepted into Japanese culture) I’ll take 1400-1600 AD Europe. I could introduce Eastern martial arts and swordstyles and become a legendary figure of the era. I guarentee you one thing, the rapier would NEVER have rose in popularity with me around. When the fancy pants rapier masters showed up in Western Europe (i.e. France, Germany and England) I would have shown them a thing or two. Thrust thrust thrust! Ha! I laugh in your general direction, rapier using dog. Begone before I taunt you for a second time.

It really makes me wonder how much history would have changed if the rapier hadn’t of become the weapon of choice…

Loot the Great Library Of Alexandria just before the mob of religious fanatics set fire to it.

It matters not whether you win or lose; what matters is whether I win or lose.

I wish I had been born to a family who lived more out in the countryside, next to a lake or a forest, where the only distractions are the friendly folk and the timelessness of the passing days.

Somedays its hard to believe I’m gonna be stuck in the ghetto for another 5 years! I can’t wait to get back to a place where I can have a backyard.
