What historical time period would you live in?

Inspired by the space colonizing thread.

If you could live in any time period in history, when and where would it be?

I’d live in 1850 California. Recent enough for some modern comforts, but a man can still go on an adventure into the wilderness.

EDIT: Oh, I almost forgot. You can’t “pop back” to the 21st Century for a visit.

Depends, are we allowed to use our knowledge to get rich?

Could we, for example drop back to about 500 BCE and unify the british celts to turn back the romans and have their own empire? Or do we have to blend in?

I like the Internet and modern medicine too much to pick any era but this one.

I wouldn’t go back any earlier than 1952 unless I could get all the innoculations I needed before going. Those ‘good old days’ were a lesson in living in filth, disease, and vermin. And outdoor plumbing? No thanks.

Sure, but do you really think that you, as a strange foreigner, would be able to unify the British Celts?
If you have a plan for how to do that, I’d love to hear it, though.
If I was in the late 1800s, I’d probably go to an engineer/blacksmith and explain the concept of automatic guns. Whether or not his design is exactly the same as modern automatic weapons, just giving him the concept of using the expanding gas to drive the next round into the chamber should be enough to get me a nice automatic or semiautomatic Winchester.

I would choose to have been born about 100 years before Columbus came, here in the Mississippi valley somewhere. The winters aren’t too bad, game was plentiful, the folks living here were relatively peaceful, and I’d die before the explorers came and all the fighting broke out.

I’d want to be part of the aristocracy in Regency England. I love the fashions & buildings & it seems a gentler, more civilised time.

I’m happy now. If I had to go back in time it’d be the early 80’s. Not because they were that special but because I know what to invest in and it’s not too far back.

Seriously though, I think now is an amazing time to be alive. I’m actually jealous of my baby nephew because his time will be even better.

I like modern technology. If not now, then the mid-sixties because it’d be neat to experience the counterculture and social revolution. Beyond that, the eighties for the same reason RandMcNally stated.

Am I the only one who wishes our modern life was more adventurous?

Paris in the 1920s, for the fun musical/artistic scene. I’d miss the Internet and my right to vote, though.

You and me could have fantastic estates next to each other and host memorable parties!

I’d choose the late 30th century.

If I chose a previous era, I’d be dead by now.

No not at all. I’m all for adventure. Just hold up a minute and let me pack my hand sanitizer, bike helmet, prescription pills, GPS, smart phone, health insurance card, dental insurance card, driver’s license, registration, car insurance, medic alert bracelet, epi-pen – and if I can just get another moment, I need to put a hold on my mail, register to pay my bills online, cancel the paper, submit my request for time off, get a substitute, arrange childcare, attempt to cancel cable and internet and see if I can get a prorated refund, drop off the cable box and modem, notify the landlord, book a flight, get some travelers checks…

I think this is why so many fantasize about the relative simplicity of a post-apocalyptic world.

To me, adventure means wings and engines.

I’d like to be around in 1869 so I could crew with John Wesley Powell.

Is that anything like asses and elbows?

Well, I WOULD enjoy the freedom and adventure of living in the post-appocalypse…

Assuming I survive the appocalypse and am not crushed by everyone I know being dead.

Yeah, Wild West sounds better to me, too.

I had rheumatic fever twice, and appendicitis. I would not have lasted long in the past.

So, can I have your money and stuff?
