If you could set the day’s Wordle and you wanted to make it challenging what word would you choose? I was thinking about EERIE. It’s not too obscure but double letters can be a challenge so three Es and the I might send you chasing for non-existent consonants.
QUEUE might be a challenge.
Maybe a word commonly misspelled. Like GAUGE or FIERY.
The hardest ones are things like LIGHT.
The day that it was, I believe, the correct word, I started with RIGHT and only had one letter to get. My choices for the next attempt were BIGHT, EIGHT, FIGHT, LIGHT, MIGHT, NIGHT, SIGHT, TIGHT. So no more clues, just pick the correct one before you run out of lines.
If you have multiple guesses left in that circumstance, you can do combinations of the possible remaining letters (with obviously incorrect words) to eliminate or confirm multiple possibilities with each guess.
Only if you are not playing in hard mode. And that makes the game almost pointless.
The only Wordle word I was not able to guess in six guesses was PROXY. So I’d suggest that as a candidate.
We can use Wordle Unlimited to try to stump. You can set your own words and share there.

In addition to the aforementioned QUEUE, I’d think that LEVEE would be a hard one (LEVEL/LEVER might end up tricking the guesser) as well as DIVVY (double Vs, fairly obscure).
never mind, full sentence for Discourse.
Ooh, that first one was tough! It stumped me for half an hour, although I got it in four.

CALYX
It forced me to do something I’ve never been reduced to by real Worldle; that third word was about the fifth in a series of things I hoped were words.
The recent puzzle NANNY made me scratch my head for a while.
GLYPH
Discourse.
Glyph is actually one of my go-to words if I’m having trouble. I typically play:
ADIEU (four vowels)
SNORT (Remaining vowel and four most common consonants)
GLYPH (If the first two turn up nothing).
If I was going to suggest a difficult Wordle I’d probably go with JAZZY. I read somewhere that JAZZ is the most difficult word in Hangman, so it follows that JAZZY would be a pretty difficult word in Wordle, too. Most people probably don’t think to use words with a J or a Z until they’re on their fourth or fifth guess, and double letters always make it more tricky.
That’s not hard, it just relies on luck. If I can think of a bunch of words that fit the known letters, the word isn’t difficult even though my probability of guessing correctly is relatively low. IMO a hard Wordle is one where you’ve narrowed the letters down but you can’t think of any words that fit. Vivid was hard for me, tacit was hard for my girlfriend.
UVULA. Double vowel and a more uncommon one at that, uncommon letter V, and not an everyday word.
Here’s a fair word where I think a 3 would be tough to get.

I got it in five. Does it have a share function? My first three guesses didn’t give me anything at all but my fourth had four correct letters all in the wrong place.
Not that I could see, which is unfortunate.
If anyone else has some tricky but fair words, I’d be down.
ETA: Fair as in it’s probably an actual Wordle answer.

SPITE - GNOME - LEDGE - WEDGE
Good one! I probably would have gone HEDGE with my fourth attempt if I wasn’t playing a deliberately difficult puzzle. Not knowing this was a “stumper” also might have convinced me to do a different second word, something with H in but G out.
