(No, I’m not a market researcher for GOOG making super-stealthy inquiries as a prelude to charging for google’s services)
**
assume that the other services from other websites are still available** (so there’s still hotmail, mapquest, etc) [I may post a second thread/poll with the assumption that there are no free alternatives to a not-free google]
thread says it all - pretend google says “ok, none of this crap’s free anymore” how much would you pay for the services you use?
feel free to comment/elaborate in the thread if you so desire. (like if you would pay if there weren’t any free alternatives available, stuff like that)
me, I would probably be willing to pay about 10 bucks a month. I know, I’m a cheapskate
The only Google thing I use is gmail and there are tons of free accounts out there. I have Google Voice, but I don’t know anyone to call, and half the numbers I try to call on it are blocked, so it’s not reliable.
I use Gmail, Google Docs, Google Maps, Image Search, News, Froogle, etc on a near daily basis. (Not to mention the search engine.) But I wouldn’t pay anything if they charged. A lot of the alternatives are inferior, but “free” goes a long way towards making up the difference.
Voted $5, but the more I think about I think if actually faced with having to go back to the days of altavista and hotmail, I think I would cave and pay just about anything within reason.
I use SO MANY Google services*. I’d happily splosh out $20 a month for them. I’ve already paid $5 a year for an extra 20Gb on Picasaweb and Gmail.
Gmail (also as a “cloud” mailserver for several domains, provided free via Dreamhost)
Picasa
Picasaweb
Google Desktop
Google Analytics
Google Documents
Google Wave (wouldn’t pay for that, mind you)
Latitude (that’s just a gimmick so I don’t need it)
Gmaps (plus iPhone app and mashups)
Google Earth (plus iPhone app)
Google Talk
Probably many more but I forget.
I love Google services, but I’m not so in love with them that I’d pay. Google maps is way better than Mapquest, and I like Google better than Bing, etc. but I still wouldn’t pay.
