Thursday was brutal for me, and I only just barely got it, and that only due to a three-word red herring that happened to match (with a bit of blundering on the fourth) to blue (I was thinking that coffee makers, cigarettes, and air fresheners all have a strong smell.

That may itself be an Americanism. Here they are strongly associated with stripes. So much so that when I image search “rugby shirt,” it’s about ten-to-one striped vs non-striped. Like if you look at classic preppy wear catalogs like LL Bean or J Crew, the rugby shirts are largely striped, though you might be able to find some plain ones.
