I knew which pairs were blue/purple and yellow/green, but managed to screw up the order of both pairs.
Too lazy to try for RR

I had to try the red herring, and then I didn’t actually get the right connection for PURPLE (I thought it was just starts with a letter sound EN, EM, EN, OH)

Saw the red herring then took my time for once and found two other clusters so I could avoid it.
That was my exact reasoning as well!
Doubt if I would have ever figured out the actual clue.
Red herringed and I had no idea what the Blue was but I saw that Purple. I’m on to you, Connections!

I didn’t see the red herring only because i immediately jumped on purple and yellow. I had the same connection for purple as others have mentioned.
Blues were leftovers. The red herring helped me separate them, though.
Red herring got me!

The herring seemed far too red today, so I sidestepped it; went fairly quickly after that. Wasn’t trying for any particular order.
As there is no Strands thread, I’ll stick this question about today’s puzzle
here …
WTF is the connection ?
The hint is “The big dance”
MarchMadness (the “spangram”)
Chalk
Bracket
Overtime
Cinderella
Bubble

Avoided the red herring for the RR.
March Madness = NCAA basketball tournament, AKA “The Big Dance”
Bracket = Arrangement of teams by seeding - who plays who in each round. Also refers to predictions made by bettors as to the outcome of each round of the tournament.
Chalk = If a bracket (or part of the bracket) plays out per the seeding (no upsets).
Overtime = Extra period if a game is tied at the end of regulation (or of an overtime period). No ties allowed in basketball.
Cinderella = A low-seeded team that makes it several rounds into the tournament. When they finally lose the clock has struck midnight and they have to leave the dance.
Bubble = Prior to the tournament pundits try to pick the bracket. The “on the bubble” means that a team is one of the last to qualify and is in danger of missing the tournament if the tournament committee chooses differently than the pundit.
Ah ! Thanks.. I’d never have worked that out !
It’s Tuesday, and this one was easier than I expected at first.

My wife and I started doing connections about two years ago. We’ve had a couple of streaks broken by simply forgetting to do the puzzle. In speaking with our kids a while back, my wife discovered all three of them were doing connections with their spouses as well.
We did the yellow first today in order to avoid what I call a trap and you call a red herring.
I saw three of the Green words, but couldn’t find the fourth. Then I saw the red herring, and wasn’t sure which was the real category, and guessed wrong. Then I went back to green, and found another word that didn’t really fit, but I guess was close enough.
And I got twice as far as everyone else in figuring out the real category for purple!
