I think they’re talking about FREE REIN, which they think should be FREE REIGN. This is more like “toe the line” vs “tow the line”, where idioms start in one space and get reinterpreted into another.

I reckon this battle is a losing one. In the last year I have found way more instances of “free rein” vs “free rein” and this is from people who are all college educated, many with masters degrees.

And no one had any clue what “carte blanche” was. Including my boss who used to be the CFO of a global 1000 company and has degrees from Ohio State and UChicago.

Actually, it originally was FREE REIGN, and it certainly should be FREE REIN. It’s been changed. So ‘they’ were correct.

Yes, it definitely said FREE REIGN originally, a common error, but as it’s for a word puzzle a lot of nerdy folks noticed it and expected better.
