If You Like "Wordle", Try "Connections"

I’m not really liking you right now.

I tried to put Christoph WALTZ in there, but I couldn’t make it work.

Another one with names for you. Could be a bit tricky.

CHARLOTTE HUGO FRANCISCO GRETA
ROSALIND MICHAEL METHUSELAH MARGARET
EMILY SAMANTHA JAMES ANNE
BRANWELL CARRIE MIRANDA HICK

Beware the red herring…

I haven’t used it in a while, but you can actually build your own only connect wall so people can solve it….

ETA this one only allows you three minutes to solve though….

I’m working on it. I thought I had two of the groups, but they both use the same name, so they can’t both be right. One of those (and I think I know which) is probably the red herring you warned about.

Sept 27 puzzle had a bit more overlap than usual, but I managed to solve it after one miss.

if i remember jack ma owned tthe Alibaba shopping site or something

charlotte samatha Carrie and Miranda are all characters from “sex in the city”

Well, I completely blew it today. Oh well.

This is for discussion of the puzzle posted upthread by @Gyrate.

I think that’s the red herring. I have

CHARLOTTE EMILY ANNE BRANWELL

as the Bronte siblings. If that isn’t correct, I have no idea what category BRANWELL would be in.

I suspect that Gyrate came up with the Sex and the City characters as a deliberate decoy. That makes me think that those four names will be in four different groups.

I’ve tried a bunch of different ideas. I thought I might have a group of actors with multiple Oscar nominations but no wins, but I could only find three (GRETA, ROSALIND, JAMES).

Still working on it.

I find it quite interesting to see the thought process of people solving these; what topics do they try, and which groups do they get first. When I watch Only Connect, sometimes I’m amazed by the groups they get, and sometimes by the ones they miss.

“That’s correct! Each of those cities hosted a Eurovision contest in a year ending in zero!”

I was just watching an episode yesterday. Two things stood out.

They had a category with five possible answers, and did the “leave out A, leave out B,…” thing, but then they only did four possible combinations. They had to leave out E, and didn’t.

There was also a wall with “HUAHUA” as one clue. Maybe it’s just me, but it was pretty obvious what group that had to be in.

This puzzle does kick ass. I have by the way identified one of the more obscure groupings, glad to share that with you if you want the help, otherwise, we can both keep working on it independently.

ETA also, this is the site. I was actually thinking of for making puzzles…

Oh hell, there may or may not be a metaclue for that puzzle. Or just a weird coincidence in the first two categories have solved.

Nah…no way.

Correct.

Also correct.

And correct yet again.

Incorrect. Not a category.

Well, I think I have the four groups, but I can’t explain one of them, so maybe not. Here’s what I have:

  • Branwell, Charlotte, Anne, Emily - Bronte siblings
  • Hugo, Hick, Carrie, Greta - Chloe Grace Moretz one-word film titles (Kick-Ass excluded)
  • Rosalind, Miranda, Francisco, Margaret - things circling Uranus
  • Michael, Methuselah, James, Samantha ?

The metaclue I referenced was the umlauted e in the first two, but never mind.

All correct. No metaclue - I’m just too lazy to deal with diacriticals here.

Last group connection not that hard, although one of the items is pretty obscure.

I had CARRIE and HUGO as movie titles, but I didn’t make the connection that they had the same actress.

I think MICHAEL, METHUSELAH, and JAMES are characters in the Bible. MICHAEL, JAMES, and SAMANTHA are saints. I don’t think either of those works for all four.

I think the oldest tree in the world is named METHUSELAH, so I looked through a list of tree names in case that was a connection. It wasn’t.

Nope, sorry. You’re barking up the wrong Methuselah tree.

Todays Connections: grew up in the south, did we? A lot of people don’t pronounce AUNT that way.
