If you open the thread you must respond - Straight Dope Karaoke!

I like a variety of teen tragedies for karaoke

The Leader of the Pack by the ShangriLas and Teen Angel spring to mind.

Later on in the evening I might try Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves by Cher.

And I’d love to join the Bohemian Rhapsody group.

“I see a little silhouette-a of a man
Scaramouche Scaramouche
will you do the fandango?”

If these aren’t the right lyrics, tfb, baby. I’ve been singing them that way a looooong time.

Maybe a little AC/DC, so I can do my Angus Young impression {left hand up in the air, right hand playing air guitar, head banging up and down}.

Never Goin’ Back” by The Beat Farmers

Sometimes, when I’m on the road, I’ll get into a Karaoke mood, and I’ll play a song over and over again to get the lyrics and phrasing down. Today, I was en route from San Luis Obispo to San Diego, and I killed an hour or so perfecting(?) my chops on this song.

Chuck Berry’s My Ding-a-ling

Rock and Roll (Part 2) by Gary Glitter.

HEY!!!

That classic Doobie Brothers’ toe tapper, “Takin it to the Streets”.

I’m a karaoke geek. A handful of dopers can already attest to that.

I’d do one of the following:

Quarterflash - “Harden My Heart”
Blondie - “Heart of Glass”
ABBA - “Gimme Gimme Gimme”
Fiona Apple - “Criminal”

That fateful night the car had stalled
Upon the railroad track . . . .

There’s a young man that I know
His age is 21
Comes from down in southern Colorado,
Just out of the service and he’s looking for some fun
Some Day Soon I’m goin’ with him, some day soon…

<cue dogs howling in the background>

Since I’ve no singing ability whatsoever, and not too many songs nowadays are written for drone bass voices, it doesn’t matter to me how hard a song may be to sing. Therefore, the whole world of music is open for me to to commit karaoke with.

My choice would either be *Age of Aquarius * from Hair or *After Midnight * by J.J. Cale sung as a slow blues. If I’m allowed a second choice, I’d have to go for *Lola * by the Kinks.

I met her in a club down in old Soho
Where they sold champagne that tasted justed like cherry cola.
C-O-L-A…cola…

Please all, feel free to remove the cotton from your ears and join in on the spelling parts of the song.

When everything’s a little clearer in the light of day
And we know the night is always gonna be there any way

I must admit though…I like this song because it was sung in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy[ul]
[li]Don’t Stop - Fleetwood Mac - because it’s good…but incredibly difficult :([/li][li]Most songs from the Forrest Gump Soundtrack - because…well, just because.[/li][/ul]

Drove downtown in the rain
Nine-thirty on a Tuesday night
Just to check out the late-night record shop
Call it impulsive, call it compulsive, call it insane
But when I’m surrounded I just can’t stop

(plus, I’d play a totally wicked air guitar for the instrumental finish!)

“True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper or “I Drove All Night” by her, or “I’m not an addict” by K’s Choice, my new favorite.

The deeper you stick it in your vein
The deeper you go, there’s no more pain…

It really is an anti drug song, but she depicts using really convincingly!! And in a beautiful way - you’d have to have used drugs in your life to understand what I mean. But she does point out the ludicrousness of denial, which is great, I love that part.
