If you see someone is BANNED...

I totally read the post history of banned users. I’m usually disappointed, which means to me it was a sock account. Why can’t you people entertain me with more meltdowns and death-by-mods

The Leper’s Colony on the SomethingAwful forums are chock full of people put on probation or banned. It’s a treasure trove of entertainment.

I always try to find the post that got them banned. If a thread is locked, I always have to open it to find out why.

BTW, anyone else notice that there have been a lot of zombie threads this past week?

I have no idea. I guess they think there’s a Troll Forum somewhere where bored teenagers get together and share lists of the latest websites that disappeared their leet trollery and warn the others not to bother with that site.

Get real, guys, they don’t spend months gleefully yanking it to their old threads and flameouts. The only effect from lifting the ban on talking about banned people is that the mods would get a lot less PMs asking why someone was banned.

You don’t need any account at all to browse the SDMB.

Just a few weeks ago I made a comment about a poster who was banned a couple of years ago. This poster was apparently browsing the same thread at that very moment; immediately signed up a sock account and posted a rant against me and the SDMB in general in the thread. Lynn also was in the thread at the same time, and banned the sock and deleted the post entirely within a few minutes.

It was like it was all a dream.

OTOH, sometimes the question is, “Why weren’t they banned years ago?”, or “How did they get away with that shit for so long?”

Around the end of 2004 the staff intituted a policy of posting a thread in ATMB explaining bannings of established members. So it might be worth searching for the member name in the titles of ATMB threads.

Or it might not. This wasn’t always done. If memory serves, the policy was instituted after the banning of vanilla, when the outcry that followed the ban was silenced by the revelation that she was a repeat offender.

Trolls are never treated this way. They’re just tucked back under their bridge in the hope that we forget about them.

But, although anybody can browse the SDMB without being logged in, how can it show “Last Activity…” for your account profile unless you have been logged into that account? My understanding is that the board function which calculates “Last Activity” latches your most recent log-in.

Especially the time that [REDACTED] got banned for telling [REDACTED] that they should [REDACTED], and right after their [REDACTED] had [REDACTED] due to a backed up [REDACTED]. And in the Cafe Society forum no less!

I’ve seen someone get banned, or at least I was active in a thread they started, and they got banned while I was asleep (I live on the wrong side of the planet relative to many Dopers). The person was… antagonistic in tone, to say the least, so the only surprise was that I had actually witnessed such a thing, rather than that it had happened with that particular person.

Yep.

Even if it’s someone I’ve been expecting to be banned, I go look to see what finally broke the camel’s back.

That may well be true.

I’m not sure whether a banned user can read the boards while logged in; however, it is likely that an attempt to log in as a banned account will be viewed by board software as account activity, even if all it does is send the user a message that boils down to “bog off, loser.”

Moving thread from MPSIMS to ATMB.

Man, that REDACTED guy sure gets around-he must have a separate little mini-sock for each finger!

There is, in fact, such a board. Not for the internet in general but specifically about the SDMB, whose membership consists, in large part, of people who have been banned from this board. It’s not the first such board to be created by SDMB malcontents, either.

And no, I’m not going to give anyone a link to it.

Yes, they do. They really do. You guys have no idea how much shit gets filtered out before it hits the boards, including an ungodly number of socks of previously banned posters. There’s a trio of threads in the mod forum, altogether consisting of some thirty pages, that’s just a huge list of banned socks - from one person.

Obviously, that’s an extreme situation, but there are a ton of people cut from the same cloth, just on a smaller scale. These people are obsessed with interacting with the SDMB in some way. The most effective means we’ve found of making them go away is to ensure they do not get any of the interaction they so crave - to make trying to post on the SDMB, for them, the equivalent of shouting at a wall. For most of them, it’s effective, sooner or later.

There’s a secret forum for Moderators??!! Damn, I just know you’re badposting me behind my back! Oh how you must cackle and heap scorn on us little posters.

I wanna be a Mod!

There are actually multiple secret Mod forums.

One of them is titled, “How much does Boyo Jim suck?”

How do you get around the characters per post limit?

You are aware that by posting this, you are just giving “them” what “they” want. Personally, I’d bet most of “them” are just doing it to yank “your” chain. It upsets the mods, not the posters, and that’s what “they” want.

Weird that this thread has appeared.

I noticed two people BANNED rather recently. One had a weird exit with Marley in a thread that seemed to me at least that Marley went off the rails very quickly with the poster. I have no idea what the history was, but the person was around for about 80 posts, so I’m guessing a couple of months.

That didn’t generate a blip on the radar screen, so clearly I’m missing something on that one. I’ve seen posters behave much worse. I don’t know what made Marley (I think it was Marley, my apologies if it wasn’t) drop the BANNED bomb so quickly but hey, I don’t see the private mod discussions.

The other one was a person who I sent a PM to. She PM’ed me back with the information I requested, and when I tried to send her a PM thanking her for the info, she was BANNED!

I couldn’t find any offending post, so I’m to assume she was a sock? Interestingly, she was also around for a very short time. I usually don’t notice things like that, but when I saw two banned people in threads I happened to be reading, it caught my eye. She was around for maybe 2 months or so. Not long at all.

I did send a Why? question to Ellen Cherry I believe (one of the IMHO mods), and didn’t receive a reply. My apologies if I committed a SDMB faux pas. I remember at one time there would be a locked post out here in ATMB that would tell you a poster has been banned and why, and that was it. And that was usually sufficient.

I didn’t realize that asking a mod in a PM was frowned on.

Oh well. Back to your regularly scheduled thread.

We generally post an announcement in ATMB for long term posters who have been banned for rule infractions. We may not do so for members who have been around less than a month or two (but often in these cases an announcement is made in the thread where the final infraction took place), or in cases where trolling or socking is involved.

In cases where no announcement has been made, and you wish to know the reason, the proper course is to e-mail or PM a moderator. Ellen happens to be away from the board at the moment and has probably just overlooked your message. (Despite appearances, some of us actually have personal lives.;)) If one mod doesn’t get back to you, you can try another. If you are still curious, you can PM me.
