If you see someone is BANNED...

Does curiosity get the better of you? I’ve seen a few threads lately that have been raised from the dead, with two or three of the original responders having been banned. I go through their post history to see what was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

It seems like a slightly warped fascination, but surely I’m not the only one doing it! How’s about the rest of yous?

Yep. I sometimes search their post history to see the last two or three posts and see if they had a meltdown.

Most of 'em end up being socks, which is so frustrating. I wish I could at least find out whose socks they were!

This could be a touchy topic for obvious reasons, but I’ll let it stand with the following caveat:

Please refrain from discussing any specific bannees, as well as the particulars that led up to their bannings. Otherwise the thread’ll have to be shut down.

socks?

Sock puppets, duplicate accounts made by the same person.

When you’re banned does your account get closed or can you still read. I ask 'cause I looked at a user profile who was banned and it says “Last activity 2009” but he was banned in 2001

It is what happens when they disappear in ne dryer.

Stranger

But not the sw, nw or se dryer?

–Stranger and Stranger

IIRC if you register a sock, both accounts get banned. My guess is that the person registered a sock and used that for a while or took a hiatus and came back under a different name. Either way, the mods caught on and banned both accounts. Also, don’t forget, even if you get banned, you can still read without being logged in.

I’m always interested to know but I never seem to be around when it happens. I was watching while a recent bannee was doing his/her utmost to permanently absent him/herself from the board but I generally miss the excitement.

I’ve wondered about banned members’ posts showing up in zombie threads. Their posts in those threads are usually so innocuous that I wonder what on earth they said later to warrant a banning but I’ve never bothered to go and check their death throes.

Just curious - why is this?

I always wonder why someone has been banned and occasionally dig through post history to figure what happened. But, since I generally stay out of GD and the Pit, I tend to miss much of what leads to banning. For the nosy, I kinda wish there were a sticky somewhere listing who has been banned and why.

I get curious sometimes, but mostly I see the word “BANNED” and I think “crap, this thread is a zombie, isn’t it?”

Nine times out of ten, the answer to that question is “yes.”

Trolls like attention. No point in banning them, then giving them what they want.

And non-trolls (ie members who’ve been banned for actual rule infractions) aren’t able to respond to comments about themselves.

This was exactly what prompted me to write this! You see something so mild, and you want to see what their downfall was.

It’s when someone with 1000s of posts have been banned that it picques my interest. How did they do fine for so long and then crash and burn?

The other one I automatically look at are locked threads…its almost a compulsion to see why…

ok wait, im confused, is a zombie thread specifically a thread started or taken over or whatever by someone that is banned or is it one that has simply languished for whatever reason?

A Zombie is a thread that languished and is posted in again, months, years, even decades later, thus brought back from the dead: an undead thread.

As for banned posters, only if I recognize them.

But odd are, if you are reading a new (to you) thread and notice a poster has been banned, they were banned months or years later and you are reading a zombie.
