If you suffer from Tryophobia. . .

*do not *look at Wikipedia’s home page today. Blecccch.

Uh oh…is the home page an image of lotus boob?

What’s tryophobia? Trypophobia, maybe? (The fear of holes.) But why? I’m seeing passionfruit, a sumo wrestler, and something about gamma rays.

Well, it’s not as squicky as lotus boob but it *is *a little off putting. It’s a passion fruit shown in cross section and there is holeyness (or rather, unholiness)and sliminess <shudder>

Apparently it’s typophobia and I has it :smack: Anyway, the passionfruit turns my stomach for some reason.

Ah, so it is trypophobia. Your misspelling made an already obscure reference impenetrable.

Yes, passionfruit are a bit weird looking, but on the other hand, delicious. I recommend them in smoothie form though. Not only can you avoid beholding their form, but they’re generally too sour to eat without some added sugar.

Typo-phobia? I see what you did there. Well played sir! (Or ma’am)

I had no idea that trypophobia was a real condition. I have always been unnerved by clusters of holes and it always made my skin crawl. I even get creeped out by those fake rock speakers that have all the asymmetrical holes in them to let the sound out. Ugh… it makes me nauseous and makes my skin crawl just thinking of it.

I thought I was the only one…

I must have had a different variety of passionfruits than you then. The ones I’ve eaten in Peru and Costa Rica are delicious and very sweet. It’s fun cracking the skin open with your thumb and then sucking the goo-covered seeds.

ewwwww! Yeah, I get freaked out by the frogs, the pods and passion fruits. I just figured it was an extension of my general weak stomach. Good to know there is a name for it. I wonder if eyeballs fall under that category.

Thanks for the warning. After I saw the lotus boob picture, I was “sensitized” for days and couldn’t even look at my kitchen sponge without wigging out a little bit. Ugh.

According to the wikipedia page trypophobia is a made up word. I tried looking it up in a real dictionary, no luck. The Google entries are incidental. I could only find an actual dictionary entry at urban dictionary, which, I believe, is similar to wikipedia in that anyone can make an entry.

I’m not saying that one can’t be afraid of things with holes, I’m just saying the medical term for such a fear is not trypophobia.

It’s not a fear (at least in my case), it’s a deep revulsion to the point that if I see something that triggers it, I reflexively flinch and look away.

I’ve dealt with this since I was a very small child, so whether there’s an official term for it or not doesn’t make much difference to me. It has been interesting to find out that there are other people out there with it, as until fairly recently, I thought I was a freak of nature and the only one who had this issue.

I think that’s a better term. I’m not afraid of them. I’m repulsed. I have a revulsion. It gives me the yicks. But I’m not afraid of them, per se.
