If you think the Schiavo case will "backfire" on Republicans, you're a fool

You wish. He said that her soul is still communicative. From the clip I saw on The Daily Show, he never said that he spoke to her; just that her soul is still aware of what is going on around it.

Must be running low on “experts.”

Haven’t left yet-husband in shower.

Is the statement above about my “taking you too much to heart” supposed to show my liberal “earnestness”?

I must correct you.

I don’t take you seriously–how could I with the performance shown here? But again, I do admire your ability to manipulate threads–masterly.

BTW, my post referred to in your post was sarcasm (the bit about the great height etc).

Youth today just doesn’t get the jokes like we did…

Entertainment Tonight has been featuring expert commentator Patricia Heaton, who’s expertise comes from… um… having kids and costarring on a mediocre sitcom.

http://et.tv.yahoo.com/celebrities/2005/03/23/pheatonschiavo2/

The TV coverage has been high on emotion, low on facts. What’s worse is, those discussing the case are high on emotion, and low on facts, essentially “modelling” expertise as ignorant passion. This is nothing new, of course. I watch NO TV news of any kind.

I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned it yet, but this whole debacle is the fucking Elian Gonzalez story of this year. All we need now is for Bob Smith (R- New Hampshire…wait a sec, did you say New Hampshire?) to get involved.

I’m going to start digging that trench now…Florida, like a gangrenous member, must be severed from the US. The Union is at stake…who’s with me?

Your numbers are heartening, but I fear that this means the Pubbies brought this issue up now so that there’ll be plenty of time before the next election to absorb any losses and whip up some new stuff for the gucks in the middle of the road to fall for. This will get their fundie base thoroughly on their bandwagon for the next election cycle or three, allowing them to be more MOR as the elections approach. As Apos said, it’s good strategy. Like Elucidator, I hope that this will backfire and lead to some serious erosion of their base among fiscal conservatives, but like Apos I don’t think the fiscal conservatives will ever jump ship.

Don’t care.

Nope.

Nah…

:: removes hat, bows :: Why, thank you, little lady.

You mean like this…

NO!!!

Actually it was your comments about being the posters child, etc. that made me feel your feeling were hurt and that I should show you some kindness. That was clearly stupid of me and anyone here can assail me for that all they want. I won’t argue otherwise.

Hell no! Florida has been a source of comfort and consolation to us people living in underdeveloped countries. I can’t the times when I have thought to myself “it could be worse, I could be living in Florida”.
:frowning:

A new USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll finds George Bush’s approval rating has slipped to 45%, the lowest during his presidency.

“Independent political analysts said the drop may reflect opposition to the White House and Congress intervening in the Terri Schiavo matter…the new poll found the largest drop for Bush came among men, self-described conservatives and churchgoers.”

As would be expected, as those are the bulk of any support he had. Liberals and heathens already disapprove of him.

any takers on the Schindlers trying to get Michael arrested for murder after she passes? how about that civil suit for wrongful death? They are not done with him.

I think there is a decent chance both will occur. I don’t think either will take hold or last however. The attempted arrest will fail rather rapidly and a wrongful death civil suit will cost a lot of money. From what I understand the Schindlers are not independently wealthy and much of the money they have used to fight the battle so far comes from “right to life” groups. I’d guess that well will run dry after Terri dies. I don’t see the Schindler’s vendetta being something pro-life groups would be willing to fund.

I could be wrong though, it has happened before.

Enjoy,
Steven

As this thread was originally about Republicans using the Schiavo case to their own advantage, I thought I’d share something I just learned.

I have mentioned my wealthy, rabidly Republican sister a few times on these boards. I just had lunch with her and she told me she has written Jeb Bush twice, informing him that she is a lifelong Republican, has voted for him in the past, voted for his brother as President but now intends to never vote for either of them again, no matter what office they might seek. Furthermore, she will do everything she can to encourage others not to vote for either of them. I am overjoyed that at least one Republican has finally had enough of the Bush Brothers All-Star Circus.

Carry on.

For more anecdotal encouraging news, there’s one of my close family members, a woman who voted for Bush in the last two elections.

She says she’s lost all respect for Bill Frist based on his shenanigans in the Schiavo case* and will not vote for him if he runs for President.

*I think this may have to do in part with his expert diagnosis of Terry Schiavo’s condition, based on viewing a videotape.

Uh, why not, exactly? I think it’s precisely the sort of thing that they’d be willing to fund, and I don’t see any demarcation of futility at the point of her death that’s beyond the pointlessness of the last several litigations.

I think, based on the rhetoric that these groups are using, it’s unlikely that they’re going to walk away from the argument when she stops breathing.

On the contrary, they’re not going to stop at pursuing Michael Schiavo. It’s “judicial homicide,” right? They’re going to sue Schiavo, his attorney, Judge Greer, and anyone else that they feel is responsible. I expect that much at least – but it wouldn’t faze me in the least if they went after Jeb Bush for negligence.

Never underestimate the tenacity of zealots. They have virtually unlimited financial resources, and they’ll keep the Schindlers dancing until they drop.

If she’s just going to shuffle her vote from a Bush to Some Other Republican Politician With A Different Name But The Same Ideals™, that’s not much of a victory.

But it’s a start. It means the person is going to be more skeptical, more actively questioning, of the next line of crap to be spouted by the next pol, and that’s a very good habit to get into. It can even lead to voting against them.

Starving Artist, it’s really too bad you didn’t get to see this post when I first wrote it. In all candor, I was inspired to compose of it during the early stages of this hijack (back when it was still just a hijack, and not a trainwreck).

Anyway, I fear it’s too late now. You just go on ahead and enjoy yourself, polishing your collection of injuries from the mean ol’ liberals: cataloging, categorizing, labeling, organizing. Maybe it will fetch something on ebay someday.

Meanwhile, the behavior doesn’t do a damn thing for your dignity.

Your point is well taken. I did indeed back off for awhile after my apology and indeed stayed out the thread for a whole night and part of the next day. When I checked back however, I found it seemed like every other post was either a misstatement of something I’d said or part of a continuing attack on me, and (perhaps unfortunately in this case) it just isn’t my nature to sit back and let myself be miscontrued and belittled without at least making an attempt to set the record straight, and to be honest, give back some of what I got. This is something I learned when confronting bullies in grade school and I guess it’s just become so deeply ingrained I can’t let it go.

Still, however, I can see that perhaps it’s best sometimes to just sit back and absorb the blows than to engage in an endless contest of insults. Unfortunately, it often isn’t until someone I have regard for (such as yourself) comes along and points it out in such a way that it really resonates with me that I’m able to step back and see that.
Regards.

Glad I was able to help in some small way. Goodness knows I have my own episodes where the tools I developed to make my life easier as a child turn out to be less useful to my life as an adult, so I’ll not be casting any more stones today.

Happy Easter.

Thank you. And Happy Easter to you, as well.
