There’s a Far Side cartoon in there somewhere…
* Men in lab coats watch something off-panel as flailing children and chunks of playground equipment go flying by their heads*
“The Homo Erectus cloning program went well until the other children leaned what little Billy’s species was named.”
For millions of years mankind lived just like the animals. Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imaginations. We learned to talk.
“These developments are often thought to be associated with the origin of language.[1]
One theory holds that behavioral modernity occurred as a sudden event some 50 kya (50,000 years ago), possibly as a result of a major genetic mutation or as a result of a biological reorganization of the brain that led to the emergence of modern human natural languages.[3]”
Diet and general health of the pregnant mother plays a major role.
A stone age baby might have developmental problems if mom was living off twigs and berries.
Also, a stone age baby would have zero immunity from modern diseases. It would suffer the same fate as the Native Americans that died from disease after meeting Europeans.
According to wiki, Homo Heidelbergensis and Neanderthalensis each also had language capability, although they did not flower into coat and tie wearing beings. Why is that?
You are asking this question with the intent of potentially sharing content on a blog - what is the purpose of the blog and what points would you be making where you would use the input you get here?
Please note: I am NOT asking because I am trying to be snooty or mean. I am sincerely asking - because you are asking a question that, if one wants to answer it thoughtfully, requires an exposure to science that you do not appear to have. That lack of knowledge is NOT a bad thing - but it does raise my curiosity about your question, the level of detail you are looking for in a response and what you are thinking you will do with the input…
ETA: assuming that’s what he’s talking about, 9/11 wouldn’t really be classified as a series of killings. More like a mass murder, or MAYBE a spree killing, given that there was no cooling-off period between killings. Of course, given the nature of the acts, none of the individuals involved could have killed in more than one location. Maybe if you put the blame solely on whoever planned it (despite his many, many flaws, I think we can pretty much rule out GWB), it could possibly be considered a spree of mass murders.
Eh - my guess is that the OP is a kid. You simply don’t grow to adulthood without knowing that humans and dinosaurs didn’t exist at the same time. Even young-Earth creationists, who will sometimes suggest that they did, are aware of the mainstream consensus that they did not.
Yes, that is my assumption, too - but I want to be thoughtful as I ask in case I am mistaken. But it still makes me curious about the blog - if you don’t have a solid science grounding and are asking this question, how does a blog fit in?
I’m no expert here, but the key word here seems to be ‘capability’; and even that is a matter of some debate. In the case of H. Heidelbergensis, recent research suggests that their ears are very similar to ours in terms of range;
"…The results don’t necessarily show that the ancient humans could speak, Quam says. “We’re saying that the ear changed for some reason and that those changes facilitated the possibility of language development,” he says.”
(from the link).
Neanderthals seem to be in a similar boat (appear to be certainly capable, but it’s damn near impossible to prove anything), although their language capability has been studied extensively. Neanderthal extinction is something that has also been hotly debated; whatever the reasons it’s obvious that whatever language capabilities they may or may not have had was unable to save them, which is the name of the game in evolutionary terms, whereas ours either benefited us in survivability, or at least didn’t hamper us enough to make us extinct.
One offhand remark he made on the atom Bomb thread leads me to believe he subscribes to the old Socialist canard that wars are promulgated by the monied class in order to improve the economy, regardless of the cost in lives.
Caveman, where you gonna go bang all of your rocks today?
Caveman, gonna take your club, and bash things along the way
Well, caveman, with your hand-carved wheel that you push around while you hunt
Hey, caveman got a dino pet whose tail wags when you grunt.
You always wear a pelt, keeps you warm when you cross the veldt
Short lifespan, goodtime caveman
