I recently posted this at the Something Awful comic forum said hey why not at the dope as well. So anyways.
Sure a young mutant will get the best possible education in the ] use of their powers that they could possibly hope for but is the school the heaven for young mutants from a world that doesn’t understand them that it claims to be?
Between the protestors at the gates, the feds picking up that creepy kid Wither on Ms. Moonstar’s squad, the crucifixions on the front Lawn, Ms Frost being shot, rumors that one of the students teleported some people onto a glaciers in Alaska leaving them to die, a giant Irish tree killing that nice fish kid, the student riots started by the kids on drugs, Magneto leveling the school last year and lets never bring up the professor’s sisters. And this only since the school went publich. So the school’s safety seems some what in question to me.
So here’s the situation imagine you have just learned they have a mutant power and Danni Moonstar is knocking on your door to hock a school somewhere in upstate New York do you pack up your stuff and go?
Also parents what happens if you learn your child is a mutant and has been accepted into and wants to attend Xavier’s do you let them go?
I just want to remind you a giant talking Irish tree attacked this school last month.
I’d go to Xavier’s, sure; it actually sounds like a safer option than the high school I attended in real life. Plus the girls wear skintight battle garb on a regular basis.
Sure. Why not? Doesn’t sound much more dangerous than any other city in the Marvel Universe and a hell of a lot safer than, say, New York City with its twenty bajillion superpowered vigilantes and villains.
Plus, I’d be amongst my own. And I’d be able to hang out with Colossus and Nightcrawler, which would be awesome.
I went to a really screwed-up super fundie Southern Baptist high school, so I figure Xavier’s school would be slightly more dangerous physically, but would promote more emotional stability and a better education. I’ll take a talking Irish tree over faith healers any day.
If we’re talking about the current Marvel universe, I’d be very worried about my child’s safety, especially now that Xavier’s is out in the open.
I’d also be worried about the institute just training my child to be a superhero, or using students in superhero-style operations. (Kinda like if a highschool-level military academy was sending students along with Green Berets on missions.)
On the other hand, I’d also want my child to have the best help available to learn to use his/her powers. Especially if the powers were very, well, powerful, or potentially dangerous. (Like if they had the power to blow people’s heads up with a careless thought, or something.) I might also be afraid for my kid’s safety if his/her physical appearance would make them a target for anti-mutant bigotry or violence. (Of course, that latter kind of danger might be misrepresented in the comics…we’re always seeing the worst of it, and probably in parts of the world where bigotry is running wild already. For all we know, a mutant who lived somewhere like Marin County, CA might never even get a raised eyebrow, even if he’d be in serious danger if he went to Bugtussle Mississippi.)
But, I guess it all comes down to what’s best for the kid. If he/she only gained the power to turn purple, and I lived in a mutant-friendly area, I wouldn’t want to risk Xavier’s. But if he/she needed special training to keep from being dangerous (or even just to stay alive), and/or if I lived in “Deliverance” country, I’d probably want to send them to Xavier’s, where they’d have a better chance of staying happy, healthy, and alive.
I’d probably want them to write every day, and enclose a polaroid of themselves holding a copy of that day’s Daily Bugle, for awhile though. (Like, until they turned 40. )
Let me think. Comfortable environment, quality education, a nurturing environment for my "talent, villain attacks to break the monotony of school work (it’d be like a snow day, only with Magneto), and a seemingly limitless supply of ungodly hotties.
“Due to the downpour of iron nails across the tri-state area all public facilities are closed for today and classes have been cancelled at Westchester Community College and Xavier’s School for Gifted Children.”
I would only go to Xavier’s school by force. That place is just too out of control and dangerous. Even without Irish trees the school has been blown up more times than I can count, is home to the most unstable personalities this side of Arkham Asylum, and has enough mind readers running around to make me constantly uncomfortable.
I think they just brought him back, actually. (Well, In the issue I saw…he might have been exposed as a fake, or gotten re-killed or something since then.)
School uniforms would have to factor into my decision, too…something like in “X-Men: Evolution,” or in Morrison’s X-Men? Yeah. A hodge-podge collection of spandex and neoprene gimp suits? I think I’ll just intern for the Fantastic Four.
I remember a piece in some magizine I once read about the most sure fire way to achieve immorality: become a super hero.
Sure, you might end up dead for a few times, but as long as you’ve got them spandex tights you’re comin’ back.
I read a recent issue in the past month or so where Kitty finds him in the basement of some laboratory so he’s back unless he winds up pulling a Pryor on us or something.
Whee. I always thought he was a cool character, and his sister was Magick…
(speaking of which, was the Asgarddian Wars not one of the most enjoyable ‘mini series’ that the X Men participated in? Just my 2.3 cents…)
[to tie it to the OP] And hey, the X Men always went cool places to go, outerspace, other planets, alternate dimensions… who wouldn’t want to get in on that in highschool? [/to tie it to the OP]
