Check this out; if you are only doing this to get a rise out of people, guess what you qualify as?
And if you qualify as this thing, guess what happens to you?
a nice little label of BANNED goes under your name.

And I’m seeing the therapist who’s a member of my gun club, so no worries.
What in God’s name is that supposed to mean?
[Benny] Oh, Rochester … [/Benny]
My statement was in refrence to this comment. I’m not threatening anyone if that’s what you mean.
Who’s Benny?
Are you really unfamiliar with what most people would take your name to be referencing?
Some of the white folks and the black folks need a whack upside their heads:
White people:
A person’s name is not a key to their character. An employee named Chantay Jackson is as likely to be a good worker as others named Sean O’Brien or Lisa Nakamura. Making judgments on a person’s presumed socio-economic origin and work habits based on just a name is stupid.
Black people don’t have a monopoly on exotic-sounding names. I am personally acquainted with two Siobhans ( an Irish name) and a Mi-Young (Korean); should we pick on them because their parents didn’t call them Sue?
Take 5 seconds to think about how your comments on other people’s ethnicity will be perceived. Because of our history, blacks and whites have planted hidden cultural landmines that can detonate in the course of a seemingly innocuous conversation. Think about the content of what you say before you say it, especially on topics that are sensitive to others.
America is a multiracial society get used to it. If Ankh-Morpork can get along with trolls, dwarfs, zombies, werewolves and humans, then can’t we as humans of different colors get along and learn from each other?
Black people
Get over yourselves. Comments like this,“The ignorance displayed in this thread is quite telling of the two Americas that exist” are foolish–we don’t have two Americas, we have only the one (or we have thousands). Do black people experience racism? Sure. Are black people the only ethnicity to experience racism? No. Do some black people practice racism in return? Yes. You’re neither special or separate. Like it or not, all of us, white folks, Asians, Latinos, and black people, are one big dysfunctional family.
Do the research and give your kids real African names. IMO, just calling your kid Shaniqua is lazy and it shows no imagination. Go to the library and give your kid a name that comes from Swahili, Hausa, Xhosa, Sotho, Zulu, Wolof, or Yoruba, just to name a few languages, so that she or he can point to a real ethnic heritage with pride.
I’ve never heard that before. Most people think I’m from New York or Minnesota. But the truth is my nickname comes from the Family Feud show. At the end they say “Louie Anderson’s wardrobe was provided by Rochester’s Big and Tall”
TheRochester, do yourself a favor, go back into lurk mode. Check out the FAQ’s, re-read the registration agreement, figure out what the “report this post to a moderator” link does, don’t post crap about trying to get a rise out of people on this message board, and try to learn why that last bit of advice is important.
This will be my final post in this thread.
I take issue with being called racist. Just because I make a joke that contains “black” doesn’t mean that I hate black people. I make jokes about everyone: whites, christians, George W, midgets, the list goes on.
I do have limits, though. I can tell the difference between hurtful and good natured. For example: I came up with this joke that I think is pretty funny, but totally out of line. (Minority fitness week is coming up, but I don’t really get it. I mean, don’t they get enough exercise running from the cops?) I would never say that to someone, even as a conservative white male, I can tell that it’s particularly offensive. Therefore, you may call me an insensitive jerk, but I am not a racist.
Excuse me gobear, but exactly how could you possibly assume to which race I belong? Either you have some amazing abilities or you are simply a dickhead talkin’ out of his ass.
I’m going to choose the latter.
Interesting. Since the first rule of this message board is ‘don’t be a jerk’
Think about it. Won’t you?
Rochester, do a Google search for “Rochester” and “Jack Benny”.
Racism isn’t only about hate:
1.The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others.
2.Discrimination or prejudice based on race.
Bet you’d have hired any of these girls in a flash, huh?

In 12 pages of Google hits for “woman embezzled”, these were the only ones I found that weren’t white-bread.
Renei.
Dellyne.
Tamelia.
Arletis. She’s Cuban.
I had to go through five pages of hits before I got to one of your genuinely different names.
Dyg Rugayah binte Hj Yahyaa. She lives in Brunei.
Okay? Do you get it? These are not just the white-bread names that I picked out–these are the names, period. These are from 12 pages of Google hits for “woman embezzled”. There were a few that didn’t have a name listed (“a woman was charged…”), but these are the bulk of the hits.
Maybe you should be screening for Elizabeths, Robins, and Susans, not Lakeshas and Re’Lashias.
Please tell me that this has all been a learning experience for you, and that you are rethinking your position vis-a-vis “different” first names on applications. Choosing employees solely on the basis of their names is deeply stupid.
Check out these names.

And that’s just “Re” through “Rh”. Are you only ever going to hire white-bread mainstream names like Rebecca, Rachel, Rhoda, Rhonda, Rose, and Roberta, and just ignore the–apparently–*hundreds * of other “R” girl names that are out there?
And that’s just the letter R.
If you are, then you’re doing a huge disservice to your company by passing up talent, and you’d be doing them, and all of us, a favor by going to work at McDonalds.
Actually, I was using the quote as a starting point for a general comment, not as a comment to you uniquely. I have no idea what race you belong to and I don’t care–it was a stupid thing for you to say. We don’t have two Americas–we have either one or thousands.
Gobear, how could you not be referring to me uniquely if I’m the person who wrote it?
Regarding the ‘two Americas’ referrence, have you never heard it before? Obviously there are more than two Americas; it’s used as a way of making a point. What would you say if you heard someone start a sentence with, “There are two kinds of people in this world…”?
BTW there are two kinds of people in the world, those who think that there are only two kinds of people in the world and those that don’t.
We don’t have two Americas…
I agree with you but there is a North and South America.
Bravo, GoBear
