IL-2 Sturmovik: 1946 on Steam

Sup

I saw this game on sale on Steam, and I’ve heard it’s one of the best combat flight sims out there, and I’m really into that sort of thing.

So, my question is, does this games contains all the other IL-2 Sturmovik games (like wikipedia told me) plus some other things, or it’s just a little expansion pack?

1946 is a compilation of all of the various incarnations of IL2, so it contains evereything (il2, forgotten battles, pacific fighters, etc). It’s the complete pack, basically.

Best sim around for the WW2 setting, easily. Definitely hit 1946 instead of the “Cliffs of Dover” - that’s a consolized version of IL2 with all the perjoratives the adjective deserves.

You’re probably thinking of Wings of Prey, which is I think a different team, same engine, but dumbed down. Cliffs of Dover is the sequel to IL-2 which isn’t dumbed down but from what I understand buggy as hell at the moment, but they’re working on it, so it might be good in a few months.

oh-ho! Yeah, I’d entirely missed that they finished another iteration already. “Buggy on release” is pretty much par for the course for flight sims, though. The real question is to what extent it impacts the game. An error in the engine pitch control in one model of one make of airplane is the kind of thing that spawns a forum thread of flames, but doesn’t mean anything to the game as a whole.

IL-2’s been worked on for a decade and has never added any major features, how much could they really break at this point?

Cliffs of Dover is an entirely new engine, and there are technical problems with it - not obscure stuff but frame rate drops and crashes and the like. Even though the game has been in development on and off for like 5 years, it’s still a rushed-out-the-door product. If it gets years worth of support like IL2, it’ll be a good game down the road, but last I heard (maybe 2 months ago) it’s a mess.
