[extreme sarcasm]So the best way to ‘restrain’ a homicidal gunman is to ‘pounce’ on him. God forbid you should put even more people into jeopardy by using guns yourself. Couldn’t they see they were just escalating the violence?[/extreme sarcasm]
There aren’t enough rolleyes.
Actually, probably only about a thousand people before the knife would be too dull to use. BUT OMG! HE HAD A WHETSTONE TOO!!!
When are you gun advocates going to understand that a lot of people are afraid of guns, that we are suspicious of people who have hundreds of bullets in their house, and we would rather have them all banned? That’s just reality. And I don’t think the media would keep up the anti-gun sentiment, such as it is, if most of the audience didn’t share that mentality.
Personally I think the anti-gun views expressed in the US mainstream media is pretty weak. When’s the last time you saw someone on TV calling for - or even mentioning the possibility of - amending the constitution to nullify the 2nd Amendment? I haven’t even heard that on MSNBC.
Further, it is not totally without cause. While criminals may constitute a small minority among gun owners, the reverse is not true - an overwhelming majority of violent criminals do own guns.
A lot of people are afraid of dogs, too, but we don’t ban them. A lot of people are suspicious of people who get a lot of foreign mail, too, but we don’t prevent people from receiving foreign mail. The fact that you would like them all banned is a non-operative preference…until you get 2/3 of each house of Congress AND 2/3 of all state legislatures to repeal the 2nd Amendment, your preferences are moot.
Guns are tools. Being “afraid” of guns is kind of sad…they can’t do anything by themselves. Be afraid of criminals. Be afraid of sociopaths. Be afraid of gangbangers. But don’t be afraid of guns…they’re inanimate objects.
Guns are not tools. Guns are weapons. Their primary function is to kill or injure living beings from a distance. It’s perfectly rational to fear them, and I find it rather cowardly that some people would justify owning a gun by pretending it’s “just a tool.”
I love how the gun nuts always contort themselves into pretzels after every shooting spree to try to deny that guns had anything to do with it.
Guns are weapons, man. Call them what they are. Defend them all you want, but don’t hide behind chickenshit euphemisms like calling them “tools.”
Face it, dudes, like it or not, these kinds of shooting sprees are the price you pay for a 2nd Amendment. If we allow any asshole off the street to get a gun, then you’re always going to have assholes shooting shit up. I’m not saying anything should be banned, but be intellectually honest enough to admit that two and two equal four. Crazy assholes plus easily available firearms equals crazy assholes with guns. Do the math.
Of course. No one who has had a gun safety class has ever murdered someone, shot someone accidentally, or committed suicide. In fact the very act of taking a gun safety class magically makes guns safe. If we just had gun safety classes in prison we could release the murderers and be safe in the knowledge that they’ll never kill someone again.
I certainly must concur about the manliness quotient, but I’m a little surprised at the recommendation of a recoil pad or a shooting jacket. Sure, it has a solid steel buttplate and fires the reasonably stout 7.62x54R, but it’s no elephant gun. As long as your grip and stance are firm, it’s not at all punishing to shoot; I’ve put 80 or so rounds through mine in an afternoon without wearing any padding, and aside from maybe a slight tenderness I was fine.
Then again, I recently took a friend shooting, and after five shots with the Mosin-Nagant he had a large bruise on his shoulder. I guess it’s a matter of technique.
I don’t shoot my Mosin Nagant very often. The thing just kicks too damn hard for me. I know, I’m a pussy, so be it. I have some relatives on my mother’s side who fought in various resistance groups in Poland and Belorussia during and before World War II, most likely using Mosin Nagants, who are probably cursing me from the afterlife and shaking their heads at the pussy who is disgracing their family name, but whatever.
The Mosin Nagant was designed to be used by Russian soldiers wearing thick woolen overcoats, on top of several other layers of clothing. If I were wearing that sort of outfit, I doubt I would have a problem with the recoil, but it’s kind of a pain in the ass to go to a shooting range in the middle of the summer dressed like that. I would consider using the Mosin for hunting in the winter - other than that, it’s just too much.
I vastly prefer my SKS’s (I have two of them, a Yugoslavian and a Norinco.) Those, I could shoot all day long. My HK91 which I purchased from our very own Johnny L.A. last year is also quite comfortable, despite all the bitching you might read online about how hard the recoil supposedly is. I don’t agree. Maybe those people don’t have muzzle brakes?
As for this guy who killed the people at church, I wish he was here so I could beat the everloving shit out of him. I can’t describe how much I hate people who do stuff like this, because they give guns a bad name, and they provide ample fodder for INCOMPETENT JOURNALISTS.
Yeah, but if guns are banned because of the bad PR, then gun nuts will have to get a life. Having millions of people attempting to get a life all at once will drive up the cost of getting a life to unreasonable levels.
Are you somehow convinced that “gun nuts” only activities involve guns? I don’t even OWN a gun. I haven’t shot a gun in 20 years. Yet I’m probably included in the category “gun nuts” because I’m not shaking in my boots that guns exist. Ooooh!
The people with no life are the ones cowering in a corner because sometimes bad people do bad things with guns. I swear to God, it seems like our entire society has become so goddamn scared of everything, not just guns. Someone accidentally broke a thermometer in that chemistry classroom! Evacuate the building and bring in the fully-suited hazmat team! Someone on our block owns a gun! Cower in your house lest he go on a rampage! Sometimes bad people groom children online for pedophilic purposes! Shut down the internet!
Try to realize that a lot of the arguments coming from the gun-haters sound like loony ravings to those of us who can actually have some sort of perspective on the subject.
Actually that’s a very similar situation. Whenever a pit bull hurts someone, you’ll find people who say we should ban pit bulls, rather than pointing out that the problem is that idiots buy dogs, too, and then train them wrong.
Are guns tools? Fine. They’re tools intended to make killing easier. Their most important uses are allowing people to protect themselves by killing others, or with the threat of killing others, in addition to letting people kill animals for food. It’s not a moral failing, it’s the obvious truth. Shooting sprees are not problems with gun education, like accidental shootings are- they’re cases of somebody using the gun on innocent people, killing and harming people more quickly and more easily than they could have been able to do with most other weapons, like knives or baseball bats, short of a bomb.
Firing 80 rounds in an afternoon is one thing; firing 800 rounds in a couple of days while perched behind low walls or piles of sandbags or on a roof or whatever is probably quite another.
