You know, I’ve posed for lots of Facebook photos with my nephew’s wife that are captioned with some variation of “Me and my awesome SISTER Amanda at some event or family function.” I’ve never worried about it before, but I hope someone doesn’t start spreading rumors that my nephew married one of his aunts.

It’s a thing that women do all the time. I’ve got other “sisters” that aren’t a biological relatives at all. But, for me and other women I know, it’s especially common to call women that have married into your family (like maybe your husband’s sisters) “sister”. Because it makes them feel fully welcome.
