"Illegals" as a descriptor of people -- considered hate speech or not?

That doesn’t make sense though. The mods have said they don’t want to have an ever growing list of so-called hate words. You think the mods are going to have a list that functions as a license to attack other posters?

Are you saying it should be against the rules for posters to criticize other posters for using certain terminology? If not, then what are you saying?

What I don’t get is, if you have a significant amount of people saying “illegals offends me, could you please not say that?”

Why do people feel the need to push back so hard against it? I mean, is it really so important you use that particular word?

If it’s off topic then yes avoid attacking the poster seems obvious.

Because people, in casual conversation on a topic that’s frequently discussed, use shorthands.

I’m not really down for banning pejoratives anyway. If people want to complain about their drive to work, I see nothing wrong with them talking about speeders and texters, rather than “person who was speeding” or “person who was texting”. So why can’t a guy complaining about illegal immigration talk about “illegals”? Would “illegal immigrants” be OK?

You sound like you’re asking everyone to play nice. Tell you what, I’ll promise not to use the term “illegals” until the next time that someone who supports deportation of illegal immigrants and failed asylum seekers is called a racist or a xenophobe. How long do you think I’ll have to keep my promise?

Honest answer that’s rarely said out loud: Because a lot of people believe “offense” is a cynical, social power play and not an honest expression of true harm.

No need to make any promises. You just need to ask yourself if you want to be the type of person that offends or not. How other people behave is irrelevant.

Considering some of iiandyiii’s threads on political strategy, it would not be an unfounded thought.

That would be fine, if, one, everyone gets behind that use, and, two, and more importantly- “Jim” is not eventually seen as racist, pejorative, slur.
See, I think some believe, either articulatedly or not, that there *should not be *a collective noun describing those present in the U.S. in violation of the U.S. code. And I disagree. I think there should be.

And “Guatemalan” doesn’t cover it, even for those illegals from Guatemala. Guatemalan means someone native to Guatemala, or with Guatemalan citizenship (and some may say someone identifying as Guatemalan through heritage). Only a very small sub-section of those are illegals. Even of those present in the U.S., only a very small sub-section are “ Jimmies”. (And no, the plural of “Jim” is not “Jims”, it is Jimmies for reasons I cannot articulate but are undoubtedly true)

Also because many people who claim that some term is “offensive” aren’t willing to dial down or tone down their own words that offend others.

I was going to say this too. When one’s professed “offense” is sandwiched between slinging insults at others, it comes across much more as contrived pearl-clutching rather than genuine hurt.

Please provide an up to date list of all the commonly used words that are actually offensive. It would be wonderful to have a go to resource of words to avoid that are in general use. Let’s face it, handling these words one at a time is inefficient.

Clearly, once you complete this list a golden age on the Dope could begin.

I don’t think most people think illegals = vermin, I very strongly think most people think illegals, mean people that have entered the country illegally. You are projecting the thoughts of a smallish group upon everyone using the word.

I’m only down for “banning perjoratives” when it’s crossed into the real of ethnic/racial slurs, as this one has, in my opinion. But obviously TPTB appear to disagree.

It’s okay – I asked a question and it was answered. I disagree, but this isn’t the end of the world. Thanks to the mods for answering the question.

They disagree as you’re projecting the use of a word by a smallish group upon everyone that uses the word.

Thank you for demonstrating your mind-reading powers here! Much appreciated.

Reading the words you write and ascribing them to your actual thoughts is a fairly accepted method of mind reading. Just saying.

You’re welcome, but all I did was read your words. Pretty simple stuff.

Pretty much.

It’s not so much if I want to be the type of person who offends. More, do I care if hypocrites accuse me of being offensive, coupled with the insistence that they know what I meant better than I do.

I am talking about this kind of thing -

Or

Serious concern needs to be taken seriously. “Concern” like that in the above posts - not so much.

Indeed, **iiandyiiii **- you’ve shown this pattern whereby you’ll say Thing X, people will note that you said Thing X, and then you’ll claim that people are mind-reading or projecting by pointing out that you said…Thing X.

Not attacking you, just saying.
