Woo hoo! Just got my PE results (electrical), and it’s a first time pass (which I was rather nervous about, since I only studied for 8 hours…)! Glad to have it done quickly. I was in the Army out of college, so I didn’t do any engineering for 6 years after graduation. Once I got out, I started working, but didn’t take the Fundamentals exam until last year (luckily I passed), and was eligible for the PE exam this October.
Today I got the news that I am…almost…a Junior Engineer! I just have to fill out a rather hideous puke-coloured form and send them nearly $400 in membership fees! I’m so glad I sent the OIQ the initial $140 for them to confirm that I did, in fact, graduate from university!
Congratulations, Jman!! Now that you’re a P.Eng, expect to have people asking for your signature on all sorts of things like passport forms, since you are now an Upstanding Member of the Community and can vouch for people. Also, are you a US engineer? Do you have to (or get to) wear the Iron Ring?
I always wished I’d taken the exam, but by the time regestration started I had already gotten a job lined up for which I wouldn’t need to be a Professional Engineer and now I’d need a serious refresher course if I did want to go back and take the exam. Actually, you passing the Fundamentals after 6 years with only 8 hours of studying gives me some hope. (Sure it would take me a lot more than 8 hours, but still, it’s only been 4 years for me so maybe it isn’t too late.)
Many congrats! I thought about pursuing my PE - for all of 10 minutes, I think. It just wasn’t important to me, but I’m very impressed with those who get it. Good on ya!
I took the FE 10 years after graduation! I studied a lot for the FE, and took a review course. There is no way I’d have passed the FE after that long without some serious refreshing. It’s the PE I only studied 8 hours for. I meant to study a lot more, but work has been crazy busy recently, and at home I’m doing stuff with my daughter and such, so I kept putting off the studying. I fully expected to have to take it again in April. Luckily, I don’t have to.
Ultimately, right now, there will be very little change in my job…my e-mail signature and business cards will get the PE designation after my name, and I can sign and seal drawings, but we have a ton of PEs in my firm, so I will probably not sign too many drawing sets…though I do a fair number of jobs as the primary engineer, so I might start signing those drawings.
You’re an electrical engineer, correct? If so, what sort of drawing sets will you have to sign off on? (Most of my EE friends do circuit design and I don’t think anyone has to sign off on those designs.)
Congrats! I have a CA Civil PE and a MA Structural PE, so I’ve been there. It’s a great feeling to have the PE under your belt. For the CA Civil I had to take an additional 5 hours of exams in addition to the national 8 hour exam. So it could have been worse!
Do get a PE stamp while you’re thinking about it - otherwise you may never get around to it. And while you may not be stamping anything for a long while, it’s still good to have.
Ah, understood. Even so, I might go back and do it some day. I’d already figured I would need some serious refreshing if I ever did try. For now, as long as I’ve got a job that doesn’t care if I’m a PE or not, I’ll probably just sit tight.
I am a consulting engineer, so I do electrical power, lighting, fire alarm and communications design for commercial buildings. I also do a good bit of highway lighting design. All of those require sealed, signed drawings by a PE to get the building permits. I likely will not seal the building drawings for a while, as those are generally larger team projects due to the size of the buildings my company does, but I am the primary highway lighting engineer in my company, so I may very well just start sealing those.
I will probably get my stamp as soon as I can. I already paid my registration fee, so I should get my license number within a few days (I just dropped it off at the state board office on my way home from work, since it’s pretty close. They said I was the first one in central OH to pay (results had only been released 45 minutes earlier, but I was done for the day and headed home, so I just popped in and paid rather than wait and forget to mail it in.
I remember vividly passing my Structural Engineering exam (a two day written) in Illinois back in the 60’s.
Only one downer. The then Governor of Illinois, Otto Kerner, had his name on the license in letters as big as mine. And shortly thereafter he began an all expenses paid vacation of quite a few years in the state pen after being caught doing what a lot if Illinois govenors do - blatant graft and corruption.
I never displayed the license on the wall after that.
Joke Alert!
If you are an ex-governor of Illinois, and notice that the guy on your left is an Illinois ex-govenor, and the guy on you right is an Illinois ex-govenor, where are you located?
Congrats, that’s a great accomplishment. I am also an EE but I never bothered to even take the FE exam, so I’m pretty far from a PE. If you’re a consultant (which I am not), it’s almost a must-have. So again, great job!
Congratulations Jman! I’m an RA. When I took my exam it was 4 consecutive days. The week started with a small line in the paper about OJ’s wife being murdered, and ended in a bar wondering why everyone was watching a slow white bronco. Great week, wouldnt want to do that again though.
Congratulations, JMan. We had a couple of long discussions here about the use of the “Engineer” title and the P.E. licensing system, about ten years ago. Like most non-engineers, I had no idea of the amount of work that goes into getting this license, and it was very enlightening. It’s too bad that people generally aren’t more aware of this.
