I’m a sucker for foreign prison movies- stuff like “Midnight Express”, “Return to Paradise”, etc.
As for books, I’m a sucker for mountain climbing narratives. It’s kind of odd, because I have no interest in mountain climbing and think it’s actually a pretty stupid thing to do.
Plots that have central characters that are immortal, really long lived somehow, or jump a bit in time (like through FTL or near light speed). I love movies or books that take place over hundreds or thousands of years, but share the same character (or just follow father->son->grandson type of thing as well).
TV-wise I love shows that focus on geeks and/or technology buffs or professionals in the IT field (The IT crowd, Big Bang Theory). I don’t watch much TV but what little I do watch is pretty random if it doesn’t pertain to this.
Sci-Fi wise I love near future singularity/cyber punk lite type of reads. I also love the FAR future fluff that is more fantasy than science fiction (Dune, Hyperion series, etc).
I also really dislike some stuff and avoid it like the plague. SF/Fan that has central characters that are werewolves or vampires and anything to do with Authurian legends. When it comes to books, I always read the first paragraph or two minimally. If that paragraph or two jumps right into explaining some crap about the kingdom or listing a bunch of places or whatever I bail. I like character driven plots and the first paragraph or two should not only introduce that character but offer some insight into him (subtle is better).
I’m a total sucker for well-done Stephen King books-realized-as-movies. In this list, I would include:
The Shawshank Redemption
The Green Mile
Misery
Dolores Claiborn
It
Stephen King’s The Shining (yes, I know a lot of folks preferred the Kubrick version)
Carrie
and, just possibly,
1408
As much as I like caper/heist/con films, I absolutely adore movies set at Christmastime that really have nothing to do with Christmas itself. (Love Actually, The Holiday, Trading Places)
I love movies set in the future, as long as it’s still on earth and bears similarities to life today. It doesn’t matter whether they are post-apocalyptic or not (although that’s another favorite category). Minority Report, Children of God, The Handmaid’s Tale (well, I only read the book), etc.
Also, zombies.
