I'm addicted to Crack(ed)

The smartphone app has the articles on a single page. Don’t know if that’s an option for you, but the app is pretty good.

I love Cracked, and I usually find that they have one or two articles a day that I enjoy reading. But their photoplasty contests are the worst. Some of them are good ideas, but the average execution is terrible. I would check out Fark’s photoshop threads, or Something Awful’s Photoshop Phridays for examples that are both clever and well done.

I meant to mention I do use the smartphone app, but it doesn’t inform me when there are updates like my RSS reader does.

That link leads to time travel. By the time I was finished, it was two hours later.

I really enjoy reading the lists, but I have to say that whoever writes the titles has an absurdly low standard as to what constitutes “insane.” It seems like every other list on there is “insane” this and “insane” that when it’d be more accurate to say, oh, “kind of interesting” or “somewhat coincidental.” If I see one more of these needlessly hyperbolic titles, I might go … oh, I don’t know. I’m having a hard time thinking of the right word.

(Pointed out errors)

Is this Gaudere’s law or just irony?

To be fair, it happens to pretty much everybody on the site not named Michael Swaim or seanbaby. It seems to be a newbie curse more than anything, first Gladstone, then Bucholtz, now Christina.

WAY back when David Wong was beginning his exodus from PointlessWasteOfTime.com to Cracked as assistant editor, he made a choice to split articles into pages because they thought the average article length was too daunting looking on one page, they found that people got discouraged or instantly bored when the scroll bar got tiny. They went REALLY overboard for a while, if you look at articles from 3-4 years ago you’ll see articles split into as many pages as there were list elements. Eventually they settled on a more sane, even compromise of 2-3 pages depending on word count.

It was supposed to be silly, silly.

This is almost exactly what I was going to say.

I’ve read some really good stuff there, stuff that rates highly on the Humor scale or the Truth scale or both—but I don’t go there nearly as often as I would if the site weren’t so damn busy and ad-ful and take so long to load.

I add my voice to cardinal_fang and garygnu praising Seanbaby as the funniest man on the internet by far. I really shouldn’t be saying anything here, but in addition to this internet we’re all familiar with there is another secret internet, and he is the funniest man on both of them.

I like her stuff. The banner heading “Let me tell you about my cats” always makes me laugh for some reason and a few weeks ago she wrote an article about driving that I thought was spot on.

I’ve heard of Cracked but never been. Can someone who is familiar with the site link a few articles that are typical of the site, so that I can see what it’s like? I don’t want to pick at random because I could end up picking sucky articles and getting the wrong feel for the site. Thanks in advance, I hope it’s not too much trouble.

I could spend hours on that site – it’s such a time suck. You read one article, and then you see one at the bottom that looks interesting, and then another, and another…

(TV Tropes, on the other hand, I’ve never been able to get into.)

I was up all night once reading the articles by John Cheese. Particularly the autobiographical ones (quitting drinking, quitting smoking, what it’s like to be poor) are flat out good writing. If he published a book, I’d buy it.

This should be required reading.

I’ve had to make a rule for myself that I’m not allowed to use the “open link in new tab” function while reading Cracked. I would read an article, spot 3 or 4 more I was interested in in the links at the bottom, open all of those in new tabs, then read one of the new articles, spot 2 or 3 different interesting links… before I knew it, I’d have 20 tabs open just for Cracked. Now I only let myself have one Cracked tab at a time. It hasn’t stopped me from wasting hours at a time on the site, but at least my tab bar doesn’t look ugly and crowded.

Is this a serious request?

We need some love for the twisted awesomeness of seanbaby’s Man comics series and Brockway’s “Choose Your Own Drug Fueled Misadventure” series.

No offense, Opal, but there is no article “typical” of the site, and even if there was, why should we go and do your surfing for you? Jesus, just go over and check it out for yourself.

Besides, your idea of a “sucky article” might be totally different from my idea of one.

Christ.

This one used to get constantly linked to here. I’d say it’s pretty typical. (Warning: not for entomophobes. May cause nightmares).
