You mean “Dhickcheney disease awareness”?
At least somebody gets it.
I was starting to worry.
Waterboarding with ice water would be cruel.
What is stupid is the people who do the video and don’t even mention it’s for ALS. So there is a lot of stupid people out there who would jump off a bridge if it appeared everyone else was doing it.
It also hurts other charities…wonder how their donations have decreased since this stupid ice bucket challenge?
Are the same people who gave this year going to give every year?
And some dipshit posted a video on their FB wall doing it to their freaking dog!! How is that cool? Poor dog didn’t know what was about to hit him.
An SDM Boarder named jimbuff

Whenever this whole ice bucket thing first got started, I knew it was voluntary and that you didn’t have to do it if you didn’t want to. However, I was afraid that it would eventually evolve from a challenge to a prank, in which people ceased pouring water on themselves, and started sneaking up on others and dousing them with water without their consent. And, having checked my facebook recently, I saw a video of a girl doing just that to one of her family members. Sneaking up and pouring ice water on her without warning. Just as I predicted, this “challenge” has turned into a typical, immature, butthead practical joke, and that is all the more reason for me to boycott it.
Congratulations. Somebody was being stupid on the internet, and you found it, thus rendering the vast, vast, vast majority of other cases invalid and making the entire exercise futile and worthless.
Or maybe you’re being an asshole and desperately believe one little video can somehow validate your silly, stupid opinion.
Then they will just have to get more creative in their fundraising efforts. They can start by putting Jerry Lewis and the whole telethon thing out to pasture.
Beside, some people are donating to other charities as well as/instead of ALS even though they are doing the challenge.
Can it possibly cause a head injury? Dumping sharp ice cubes on your head?
In quite a few videos I have seen people accidentally drop the whole bucket with the water on the person’s head, from a few feet up. That definitely can cause a head injury. Wonder how many around the nation so far.
And a fire hook and ladder was used in one place (in MA, IIRC) and they managed to hit a power line while up there dumping the water, causing two serious injuries.
And who was the idiot that came up with the idea of walking out of the house without being fully encased in bubblewrap?!
I haven’t seen any stats yet, but I would heavily bet that the overall donations are up across the board. The ice bucket challenge raises awareness for ALS, but it also raises awareness of philanthropy in general, and motivates people to action. Most natural disasters do the same - people donated to Katrina *and *their regular charities. People donated to tsunami victims *and *their regular charities. The one exception in quite a while was 9/11, but that really broke through a fairly unique threshold of apparent need.
Of course not. But why should that matter? They’ll have increased their repeat annual fund donors a thousand fold by the time this is all done - and that’s what matters here.
To paraphrase something my (deceased) mother once said,
GO SOAK YOUR HEAD! (All of you!)
Oh, and before I go on, one time I was ready for her remark, and had a quarter-full cup of water to pour on my head. Big yuks!
(Maybe I was ahead of my time?)
One thing that I had already pondered before reading is: What about other charities? Oh sure, just upthread there is talk about people increasing their regular charities, and greater general awareness.
Nevertheless, what alternative stunts do you expect we’ll see? Let’s say, to give one example, charities that help fight “human trafficking” (slavery) …
Any ideas?
You’re just fucking with us at this point, aren’t you?
Well, ILikeForeignLanguages, here’s an article written by someone who is on your side. I’m not so sure how much a right-winger is going to dig having someone writing for Slate on your side, and Slate in general is kind of notorious for writing articles that are contrarian for their own sake, but I thought I’d look around and try to find you a kindred spirit. You are not alone!
Perfect. While I’m up for any excuse to play in water, you can still donate without playing stupid games.
That has got to be one of the dumbest articles I’ve ever read.
“Nantucket

Oh, yeah - I remember you. You don’t take criticism well at all.
