I’m not sure that either of those things can be turned off entirely. Those are core to the Discourse philosophy. What people like and what they don’t like is really, really important to the software, and it was intentionally written to be so.
It’s like people haven’t used other message boards before, by the prognostications of doom and gloom.
As for me, I’m just happy that we won’t have all the errors and pauses and stuff.

And
doesn’t work to get you colored text. I don’t know if there’s another way – haven’t seen any mention of it yet.
Hooray! No more evil red warnings from the moderators!
But also no more orange quotes from the Orange One SAD!

But what will happen to all of The Grapist’s posts once they get moved over?? Won’t some one please think of The Grapist??
On second thought…
I’m pretty new here so forgive me if I say WHHHHHAAAAAAAAATTTTTT?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
eh, if it’s like any other site I’ve been on that upgraded or replaced its forum software, there’ll be some initial wailing and gnashing of teeth over the cheese having been moved, then people will just get used to it.
I am a bit sad about this. One of the things I like about the SDMB is how it has looked the same year after year even as the rest of the Internet has changed. However if it does solve the timeout problem I guess it will have been worth it. I had never heard of Discourse before but I suppose we will all have to figure it out.
Have you run a message board on Discourse? To me, it would be a pretty bad idea to not be able to turn that off becase a lot of people would hate it.
when you buy/rent software in almost all cases you take what they give you. If you don’t like the features don’t use it. Or write your own software.
Modern software often comes with “settings”, which allow you to customize it to your whim, within limits.
I think the only real issue we’ll have will be the really long threads like the clusterfuck thread or the evil cops thread, etc. Trying to navigate through those could be a nightmare. Kind of like how it is trying to read a really popular thread on Reddit, or trying to scroll to the bottom of the comments of a popular youtube video. All that scrolling, plus, waiting for the next batch of posts to load. At least I’m guessing it will be like that. I haven’t found an example thread that was long enough yet to check it out.
But yeah, other than that plus how awful the modern look is, the new place will be tolerable.
Discourse is chock full of bad ideas.
There are settings on software but not every feature can be changed or removed. I don’t think Word lets me get rid of the spell checker but I can change it to a language other than English.
I like the Discourse style for quoting a post. I’m tired of having to quote (reply to) the whole post, then laboriously delete everything EXCEPT what I was trying to quote. It’s like carving a small sculpture from a big block of marble.
That was a Doper, circa 2000-2010 (?), who would post in purple-colored font style…and, I believe, quote others’ posts, but in purple.
You talking about Quote Reply, where you highlight some text and it shows you a quote button?
That, to me, would be the most awesome thing in the world if it didn’t prevent me copy/pasting and using my dictionary apps. Maybe it works better on a phone, but I only message board on my PC.
I guess so! I haven’t actually checked out Discourse yet — my observation was based on a couple posts by others in this thread. I mean, this topic.
Also, what’s a “dictionary app”? Just curious.
Highlight a word, click on it, and choose which dictionary you want to look it up in. Opens a new tab with the entry already loaded.
Board software comes with a lot of options. This is a very odd post.
The Grapist was from an Onion satire on McDonald’s Hamburglar called the Hammurderer. The final paragraph was this:
A prankster registered as “The Grapist” and began quoting posts but changing their color to purple, with the message “This post has been graped by the Grapist.” He was banned, but there were a few copycats afterward.
Cool, thanks.
