I'm disappointed that we're getting Discourse

My browser doesn’t have grammar check …

It’s the way we roll.

I miss playing with a big shiny blob of mercury. Edmond Scientific. Good times.

I’m about to post some screen shots of the new site. Please remember it’s still in development and not fully baked yet. Also it’s a really old data file so nothing the least bit recent or relevant. It doesn’t mean anything.

As an older guy, but having been online since Quantum-Link, I actively avoided Twitter and Facebook because they are precisely what you describe: not structured, not moderated, and my news feeds fill up with garbage. I only tolerate Reddit because I can feed my subscribed subs into RSS, which provides the structure that Reddit otherwise lacks.

Well, I’d gladly trade every single emoji, short user names (if I need 10 characters, maybe I’ll just be diiiiiiigs), and ending a sentence with a preposition for basic functionality.

Bring it on, gang. Everyone here needs to learn some flexibility.
Thanks to everyone who’s working on this!

I see that my and GreysonCarlisle’s concerns have not been addressed by the mods. They are legitimate concerns. Have you actually disabled the whole “like” issue, the trust levels (which depend on likes), and reports automatically hiding posts? Have you worked out some way to work around them?

This isn’t some mockworthy thing, like worrying about the font or emojis or how quick quote works. These are fundamental differences in how the board works under the hood. Being able to silence people you disagree with is something that does ruin boards. Even being able to make them fall off the page can cause harm.

Think about GD. How many reports do you get that are unactionable, Jonathan Chance? What if those posters now had the power to remove the posts they report? Even if it’s only temporary until you get back to it and unhide it, that seems like it would be a huge issue.

I don’t think this is a frivolous question. So please answer. Have you found a way to disable these features, or work around the issues I’ve stated?

If you don’t answer, my assumption would be you’re just ignoring this thread now due to the overwrought OP, and I’d make a new thread.

Has anyone checked whether Discourse still lets you say “cunt”? If not, this may all need to be rolled back.

There’s a plugin for that.

TubaDiva answered the question about crowdsourcing moderation in post #33 before your last post.

Have a great day, BigT.

engineer_comp_geek, I was pointing out the ability exists, but I agree emojis are easy down the priority list. However, the page I linked says there are three sets of emojis to choose from besides customizing, so even “default” may require a choice. Choose well!

I know this is off topic, but is this available only as an app (on mobile devices), or can it be used from a laptop?
mmm

It’s a browser plugin for Chrome and Firefox. I only ever use my desktop for message boards (too hard to read on my phone), so they ought to work on your laptop.

Here are a few I use for Chrome:
Merriam-Webster
Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary
Etymology Online

I want the congratulate TPTB for moving to a new format in response to an actual problem, rather than just changing things up for the sake of newness, like many sites that discard perfectly good formats in exchange for something worse.

*of course, the real purpose could be to install digital trackers so They know where we are at all times, facilitating harvest of our internal organs to feed superior alien beings.

That feature was rolled out last year on vBulletin, but it’s by lottery only.

None of that replies to what I said. She said they removed it, but then GraysonCarlisle said that’s impossible. So we have conflicting information. I am asking for clarification.

I would also ask you to read entire threads before responding. I already addressed that post several times, so you should have known I was already aware of it.

I also hope you have a nice day.

It’s probably impossible to remove Trust Levels and have a functioning Discourse board. But I believe that group moderation can be toned down. No point in fretting about it–this is what we’re doing, so we might as well all get on board and try to minimize the damage.

It is the move that likely will kill the SDMB, whether it be to Discourse or to anywhere else. The hardcore user base will make the effort to move across but its likely that a lot of people won’t bother or will just get lost in the shuffle. They won’t bother checking their emails, won’t bother trying to get their accounts reset or reopened, will take one look at the new format and nope out, will see some of the new functions and nope out etc etc. And every member lost will mean less traffic and the board will become even less relevant than it already is.

Surgery sometimes kills the patient, thats just the way it is. What the OP seems to miss is that if you are dying anyway then surgery is the right choice.
