I'm giving up on Linux and want to reinstall XP

Where do you live? I’ve never heard of such a requirement in the US. ETA: Make that “I’ve never heard of anybody telling MS they were going to do something and then they did what MS told them to do.”

Oh, bite me. My professional work is 2D and doesn’t need fancy equipment. Shit, my first CAD system used a hot-rodded Apple II Plus and a five megabyte hard drive.

You know, it would probably help if you at least approached this discussion with the understanding that you’re asking how to do something ridiculous. Sure, you have your reasons for wanting to do something ridiculous, but asking for help with that in mind will engender far more friendly responses than puffing up and lashing out as though just daring someone to pick a fight with you about your technology choices. I understand that it’s frustrating, but it’s not productive to direct your frustration against people who have no share of the blame for the fact that your hardware is old or that Ubuntu is bloated.

Sincerely,
A rabid Linux fanboy

I didn’t think The Niply Elder would take it personally. Still don’t, but I’m sure he appreciates you riding to his rescue. It was a sort of CAD-nerd exchange, where everybody makes fun of everybody else’s tools and preferences, especially if one is a bit behind the times. I assume he’s a Solidworks user while I’m old-school AutoCAD–there the exchanges get more faux-heated because the entire philosophies of the packages differ. No offense intended and I hope none was taken.

OTOH, my daughter has a laptop with a broken screen and no power supply she’s not using. Five years newer and Win 7 to make some of you happy. If I do get back into CAD freelancing I could fix it or just buy a new one for not a lot more money. Let’s see what’s happening at MicroCenter!

No, what’s within my budget isn’t significantly better than what I have now. Not like the old days, when 8 years was 3 or 4 technogenerations.

Why? Why in fuck’s name?

[del]Because they are as annoying as Mac fanboys but smell worse?[/del]

Because they are as annoying as any true believers, including Windows fanboys or anybody else who is convinced that their favorite tool should be everybody’s. I dunno, they just get on my nerves, especially now that I have seen their emperor could be dressed better.

That amalgamation of words make me want blood. Seriously, I need to know why it exists.

Simple: True Believers of all sorts, computers, religion, whatever, leave a bad taste in my mouth. Like Windows and Mac OS, Linux has its flaws, but some people refuse to see it, or they see the flaws as features.

God help you if you put Mustangs VS Spitfires in a post…

Those two are just pretty. P-38s all the way. Funky, but effective.

F4U Corsair all the way.
