Being a complete dumb-ass it took me over a year to realize why I couldn’t use my DVD burner to make DVD’s. It writes at 2.4x and the slowest disks avail are 4x.
So I broke down today. I got a nifty +/- RW drive that should handle anything I throw at it for the next year or two. (anyone interested in a $300 CD burner? Didn’t think so.)
So I’m goin’n in. I’m taking out the CD burner as well as this piece of shit I never got working and installing the new burner only. Now, I’m pretty good at hardware stuff, but I’ve screwed up more than a few systems trying to install shit that seemed easy enough, but had one little step I miss that makes the whole thing want blood. Hence, the latest GQ’s on hardware stuff.
Anyway, I’m going to start right after I hit the liquor store for some beer. I’ll need something to quell my apprehension. I’m 99.999% sure this will be easy to finish off, but I have a knack for finding that one rare thing that keeps stuff from being 100% fool-proof.
If I’m not seen for awhile, you’ll know why. Here’s to a speedy return to the boards.
Um, the speed rating on blank discs is the maximum speed you can reliably write to them, not the required speed. So you can write 8x discs at 8x, 4x, or 2.4x.
But that’s neither here nor there. Congrats on the new burner! Good luck installing it – I’m sure it will go smoothly. Just make sure you set the jumpers correctly. (Two devices on a single IDE cable, the first one has to be master, the second has to be slave. By itself it has to either be master or standalone, depending on the device.)
I can’t understand how I didn’t see this thread going in this direction. FWIW, new drive is mounted (though not sure which is on top for all you pervs) , er, I mean, My People. Time to see what happened.
BTW, where the fuck are you all in my Freud dream thread? So much imagination, so few responses.
The new DVD burner is in the top slot of the tower. The old DVD burner is sitting beneath it. The top(new) burner is connected to the master connection. The old burner is connected to the slave connection (the one between the main drive and the motherboard.) The jumpers are set properly to master and slave. The CD-R burner is sitting on the coffee table in the family room.
Drive assignments in control panel are a little goofy and not sure which is which. Any ideas on how to check the drive assignments to check if the new drive is recognized?
Oh, one more thing. Before the whole master/slave thing gets out of control, it’s still happening today and has for millenia. Don’t equate simple descriptive terminology that is, in fact, very accurate. It’s not commonly used just to piss you off. Well, until now.
