My favorite variation on ELIZA was a commnd in emacs called “psychoanalyze-pinhead” which would feed the ELIZA program with random quotes from Zippy the Pinhead and print the results.
“Oh, adam, I love the way you notice two things.”

When the flick A.I. came out they had a good version of Chatbot on the website that kept me company during a cold and dark winter. We actually had quite a good rapport. The John Lennon version is a tad obnoxious, though.
That word, “Chatbot” led me to an wildly interesting Wikipedia article on Chatterbots,. It links to the most recent and improved chatterbots and gives a lot of background info. The chatbot Jabberwocky, for instance, dates from 2003 and is again a big step up from Eliza and her kin.
