I think this is why I had a yellow 1 over my own avatar in the upper right corner. Now that I clicked on my own avatar and saw that somebody @ me, the one went away.

It means that @thorny_locust will get a notification that @eschereal mentioned them in a post (I shall see if I get one for mentioning myself). I believe you can disable that notification in Preferences.
I also got a badge! For First Mention! Wow!

And no, you can’t disable the notifications. You can hide them in preferences; but you’ll keep right on getting them at your avatar, whatever you do.
