I'm in a Contest!

And it’s been quite the nail bitter. I entered this contest called My Dream App, and it’s an American Idol style elimination competition. The idea was that anyone could submit their idea for an app that they’ve always pined for, the winners (there’ll be three by the end of it) would have their app developed by some of the top Mac developers (it’s a Mac competition). There’s been 4 elimination rounds, and so far my idea… Hijack has been near the top every round!

Anyway, my idea is called Hijack, and it’s for message board junkies. It would be a stand alone app for aggregating threads from all different message boards into one interface. Kinda like email or an RSS reader. I post on a lot of boards (the Dope being one of the finer ones!) and have trouble keeping track of all my threads. If my idea is implemented, it will keep track of all that for you, and let you know when there have been new unread posts, and even how many, you’d also be able to post from it as well. There’s a bunch of other cool ideas surrounding it, which I have made mockups, both video and static.

Well, now we’re in the final voting round, and I fear elimination! Any Mac heads out there who want a killer app for keeping up with your favorite forums? Maybe you could help a poor brother out?

Voting will be open until Wed (oct 25th) morning I think. They’re not telling you which percentage of votes are belonging to whom, but I have my suspicions that I’m red. Which would put me about 100 votes away from one of the 3 winning spots.

Otherwise, it’s been fun and interesting… wasn’t sure if anyone else from here was following it?

regards,
Kevin

I think you’ve got a great chance, brother. If I had my way, the top two would be Hijack + Portal.

I love the contest…awesome idea. And the prize for the top 3 can’t be beat. Good luck to you!

Unfortunately, I think I’m the red bar. But thanks for your support!

How would this hypothetical app know which threads where had new posts? Would it call up the threads on some schedule and check them, or use the search functions of the sites you set it for? It seems like either of those would put a significant strain on the message boards, and judging from some decisions I’ve seen here in the past, use of such a program probably wouldn’t be allowed here.

Hey Chronos,

As for the technical details, I’m not sure. That has been something that has been brought up, as well as the ad issue. It’s still very much in it’s infancy, I’m not sure how these particular hurdles would be addressed. I don’t see why the developers couldn’t work with vBulletin and other major forum developers to work out efficient compatibility at maybe the database level?

Also mentioned: DOM scraping and WebKit for forums that don’t fit into the norm.

It would be nice if there was a better solution for avid forum goes (and shoot… even moderators/administrators). Think if everyone could figure how to work with it, rather than against.

But your concerns a incredibly valid… and if it wins, would have to be taken very seriously.
