I'm in CO; what should I do with myself here?

I’d like your advice. What can a girl with a modest income and a non-SUV do to keep herself entertained on the weekends here? Much obliged.

I’m just north of Crested Butte to be exact. The mountain passes still seem a bit snowy, so I’m reluctant to do any 11k+ hiking just yet, but I’d like to know what else I can do. Anyone know of hot springs (besides Conundrum) in the area?

Well, when you’re not in some hotel,
I’d suggest
Living out this life you’ve chose
And come to know so well.

Otherwise, you might check out the Crested Butte visitor page, or, based on their map, you’re only a couple of hours fromm Colorado Springs and the Garden of the Gods and Mount Manito(u?) in one direction and Durango (with some historic attractions) in the other (if Crested Butte does not have enough to keep you occupied).

Here is a list of Colorado hot springs. (You’ll have to figure which are close to you, yourself.)

Go on down to Lake City. Fish.

Head over to Pagosa and shop.

Have you driven out to Royal Gorge yet?

Does Crested Butte still run the lifts for mountain biking?

Take a long day and drive/hike out to see Mount of the Holy Cross. (Or have i got the locations mixed up?)

Hot Sulpher Springs can be avoided, tho. Smelly.

Let’s see, there’s alway Gunnison. While I am not familiar with their bars and taverns they do have them.

Head towards Montrose and enjoy Blue Mesa Reservoir, that’s a pretty area. In addition, Black Canyon of the Gunnison is beautiful.

I don’t know if Gunnison has a WalMart but if you are in the need to do some in town shopping, like WalMart, Target, department stores and such, Grand Junction is not way out there but might require an early start in the morning. The drive is pretty for the most part.

If you get a chance, drive into Olathe in the later part of the summer and get some produce, specifically Olathe sweet corn. The western slope has excellent fruits.

You can go rafting in Buena Vista, they have several drop offs there. In addition, there’s are several “springs” resorts around there. There’s one that is not too far from you but it slips my mind. I will have to ask my friend what they are called as I forget.

Hiking on the Grand Mesa is very cool. A favorite haunt of me and my (may he rest in peace) dog. I miss that area so much.

Well, those are a few ideas. Hope that helps.

I hear that alcoholism is quite popular at this time of year. Suicide’s more of a winter thing.
sorry just not happy with the state at the moment

raisenbread…huh?

What was that about dude? What is your problem with Colorado?

I second Garden of the Gods and there are several other great things to do in and around Colorado Springs. Seven Falls was very cool and also the Cave of the Winds.

jlsmith57,

I live within a 20 minute drive from the Garden of the Gods, heck I live in Colorado Springs but for Yumanite’s purposes, it’s a long drive here on a modest budget unless she can stay a night. yes there is some camping in my area but the choices are limited much like up in Denver.

Granted I am all for people playing in and around our area, but frankly, Crested Butte is a good drive from here to there to play around for a day.

Guess we need to have another Colorado Springs Dopefest to get all the Colorado Dopers together. If anyone is up for it, please email me or I can post another thread. I would do a Denver Dopefest but the Dopers are spreading farther than just our area and seem to be closer to C Springs than Denver.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I don’t have a mountain bike with me, so I guess that’s out. Otherwise, I’ll be checking out some of the links you kindly provided after work today.

Ex Grand Junction guy here. Grand Mesa is great for fishing and weekend drives, although the elevation means it’ll still be snowy later than the lowlands. Colorado National Monument is equally scenic and the roads are maintained a little better than the Mesa. From Grand Junction, you’re about an hour and a quarter from Moab. Canyonlands is awesome. Dead Horse Point and Upheaval Dome are a must.
