Don’t get me wrong. I love our new 60" OLED smartTV. Especially since it really doesn’t take up more space than our 12 year old old 50" 1080 TV (with the giant bezel).
But there are times watching shows in 4k, that I’m kind of put off by the high level of detail and realism. I don’t mean just the “soap opera” effect, which I can turn off. I mean like watching WandaVision, I don’t see Wanda and Vision. Like I see a giant Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany in the room with me, but in costume.
Even my kids complain they don’t actually want to be “in” Doc McStuffin’s office.
It may not be the resolution as I’ve heard some complaints about UHD in that the details/highlights brought forth are not how we actually see things and that can cause distraction drawing you in to aspects of the program that are not relevant and even eye strain. Add to that is some UHD is a crappy implementation of UHD. You might try to turn off UHD.
About six months ago, I upgraded from a 46" HD set to a 65" 4K set and the realism is a minor issue. But the bigger problem I’ve been having is the lack of synchronization between the audio and the video, so people’s lips aren’t moving in sync with the dialog. There is a setting for this in the TV controls and I’ve been playing with it without every getting it right. And I think the effect varies by channel, so that, for example, CBS seemed OK while NBC programs seemed out of sync.
With one bad eye, I always felt a bit smug that when I watched a television or a movie screen, it was more like “real life” to me, than for “normal” people who had 3D vision. I guess now it’s not realistic for anyone…
Ooh, maybe they’ll develop settings where you’ll have custom profiles for each family member: “DadVision Profile” will have softened edges and compensate for mild red/green color blindness, captions that only come on when a character has a British accent, and will mute commercials that butcher classic songs from the 70s.
I love my OLED but I do know what you mean… with a great source, 4K + HDR color makes some things VERY obvious. Like when someone’s makeup was applied with a trowel. Or when an actor has a little sheen of sweat on their upper lip. Or really emphasizing the crummy quality of a lot of special effects work.
I think you mostly just get used to it in a way. It can still be a little distracting now and then but after watching something like Planet Earth in 4K, I have no interest in going back to the olden days of just “regular” 1080p HD…
