Well, I got OOTP to work (guess I just needed to reboot). This rocks! A fun sim and very quick-paced. And detailed, too. Well worth the bucks. GREAT idea!
Looks like the AI needs a little work. I’ve had two incidents where I’d be simulating a season and get kicked out of the game back to my desktop. After a while, I realized that the first time was becuase the game being simmed had no starting pitcher for one team. That was easy to fix. The second time was on the last day of the season, after several tries, I finally made both teams human-controlled and was able to move on. Still don’t know why that one couldn’t be simmed with the AI.
I had that problem to, that the game would crash if I didn’t have the starting pitcher for either of the teams. But, as you said, easily fixed. The thing that was tough to get used to for me was the actual changing of the starting pitcher. On the lineup screen, I kept dragging the pitcher I wanted over to the ninth lineup slot. When I do this, however, no pitcher appears in the pitcher slot above the lineup. Then, when I go to begin the game - crash. So what I have learned to do is to drag the name to the pitcher slot, and then the #9 slot is filled in automatically.
Other than that, no complaints.
For those of you who have OOTP, I have two questions:
-
Can you customize your own league? If I don’t want to keep track of thirty rosters spread over six divisions, can I simply have a sixteen (or fewer) team league with only two divisions?
-
If the answer to #1 is yes, can you add teams several seasons down the line (ala expansion)?

Yes, it’s possible to have two 16-team single division leagues. In fact, I’ve started a career with the 1915 season to see how Babe Ruth does as a pitcher.

I don’t know if this is possible. I have seen discussions about expansion teams on the OOTPMB; you might want to try there.
Mine’s still running great, only I have a dilemma. I just bought a new PC, and I want to port the OOTP on the old PC to the new one. No problem, you say? Well, the setup program is 10MB, so I could conceivably email it to myself and pick it up on the other side. However, even if I did so, I’m in the middle of a season (well, 13 games’ worth). Anyone know how I can save a season and then export it to the new PC? I’ve already emailed OOTP’s tech support, so we’ll just have to see.
Depending on your ISP, 10 Meg is probably too large to email to yourself. For example, AOL’s limit is about 3 Meg. I’d recommend getting AxMan, which can not only zip the entire OOTP3 folder–including your saved season–but will also divide the resulting zip into smaller, more manageble parts. I often download something via the T1 line here at work, use AxMan to split up the huge file into AOL’s maximum 3 Meg, then email to my AOL address.
Thanks, Jeff. You’ve been a big help! I visited the link you provided, and downloaded the program - but when I launched it, a message box said it was corrupted and that I should reinstall it. I re-downloaded the thing a few more times, with the same result. I then did a Google search on AxMan and went to the program’s home page and tried downloading from there, too. No go. Then I clicked to show all of the possible download sites and tried each site that Cnet had deemed to be very reliable. Each site (!) returned a “Cannot display” message!
Dang. I’ll try again tomorrow. Looks like that’s what I need, though. Thank you again.
