I'm moving to Ohio!

Good goin’ - but can you get me a decent lease deal on a Twelve Convertible Sedan?

That model’s certainly better looking than their current offering.

Good lord. It just oozes nostalgia.

Unfortunately, it seems to be nostalgia for the '70s. It looks like an AMC Pacer that won the lottery. It looks like it’s had more plastic surgery than George Hamilton.

Medea’s Child, please tell me you’re not aiding and abetting this movable travesty…

Central Ohio checking in. Welcome!

GT

To be honest, I’m not entirely clear on what I’ll be doing yet. Its a newly created position, so no one really knows. But its part of Material Engineering. So when the guys who come up with the rolling travesties want to use a particularly stupid resin to make them, my boss will have me tell them no.

tomndebb and samclem, eh? I guess I’m in good company at least - if still isolated for perfectly routine social events. I can show both of you how to have fun, in my miniscule apartment. Or something. (We can end early…)

Well, I know there’s at least one other Doper who lives in the Youngstown area - but I can’t remember who it is.

There is a small alternative paper in town - I don’t remember what it’s called, though. I haven’t seen a new issue since early December, so there should be a new one out soon. It’s got information on clubs and such in the area. If I can find the name I’ll post it.

I saw the thread title and figured Lsura would have waded in… she was in the same boat.

As tomndebb notes, you can head west on 422 and get into Amish county. There is a lot more not far from there.

There is a nice little park a few miles south of 422 called Nelson Ledges which is full of neat cliffs and rock formations. Don’t go if the rocks would be wet though… Geauga County is nice when the maple sap starts to run - check out Chardon and Burton especially. A little more than halfway to Cleveland is Chagrin Falls (my hometown) which was a sleepy little village when I lived there but is now a quaint overpriced slice of New England in Ohio (NE Ohio was part of Connecticut’s Western Reserve; Chagrin Falls and Hudson probably best reflect the old architecture). Then, as previously suggested, head into Cleveland and enjoy yourself. Once you decide to head in, search the board - I think there have been several “what to do in Cleveland” threads over the years.

Nah, I’m all the way in the southeast corner – right on the Ohio River, near Wheeling, West Virginia. In fact, that’s how I explain to people where I am. They know Wheeling, WV, but not Martins Ferry, OH, which is 5 minutes away. That would of course be because Wheeling has a racetrack/casino.

Welcome to Ohio!

Southeast corner? Did you move and forget to change your location or are you just trying to be sneaky?
I do have trouble with my right and left, but I’m pretty sure I know my directions.

Welcome to Ohio, Medea’s Child. Do yourself a favor and get your hands on some buckeyes. Not the tree. Not the nut. The CANDY. They’re like Reese’s peanut butter cups only shaped like a buckeye. The nut.

Yum!

Oh, crap. Cincinnati is still in the southWEST corner of the state.

Umm, blame Ohio schools?

chicago checking in, but the daughter attends school near cleveland (berea). dinner, music in the flats is worth a trip in. coming from chicago, every time i go to see a band, or catch dinner in the city, i’m amazed at how non-congested it is. kind of metro, but not really metro.

drive through beer stores are incredible. pop the trunk, fill 'er up and go.

weird liquor law state discussions must also include iowa. state run liquor stores that not only over-tax, but keep bizarre hours and harder to find than a virgin in vegas. on the other hand, beer and wine are prominently advertised and sold at gas stations, including interstate rest stops that presumably, you have to drive to get to.

also (bouncing around aimlessly), it’s scholcky, but the “oh cool, look at that” factor is very high at the r & r hall of fame in cleveland. there’s some other worthwhile distractions right there on the waterfront as well.

CPS?

Although, not to limit it to the miserable state of Cincinnati schools, I left Clermont County because their website announced with pride their improvement on the district report card. They were actually patting themselves on the back for failing less miserably than the year before. What an improvement!

We chose our home based on the district. There are some great districts in Cincinnati.

Cleveland (east 'burbs) here. But after having lived in NYC for 25 years (and missing it), I’m not the person to sing the praises of NE Ohio.

But we’ve got a world-class art museum and the Cleveland Orchestra, one of the best in the world. These are both in the University Circle area, which has many museums and cultural institutions.

There’s a ton of theatre here (the Theatre District and Playhouse Square, among others). Lots of sports, but don’t expect any of the teams to actually win much, except for the Cavs (aka the Lebron James Show).

Yes, you can visit the Amish, if you like buying overpriced, commercialized “crafts” that are dubiously authentic.

A little nearer to you is Geauga Lake Amusement Park (formerly 6 Flags).

I’m in central Ohio.

When will you be moving? If you’re coming into town by late March, check out the Cleveland International Film Festival. It’s absolutely wonderful.

Hey–could this be an opportunity for an OH dopefest? I’d love to go if there is one.

I second the notion. I haven’t been to Cleveland for a couple of years. I LOOOVE Cleveland. It’s so much more interesting than Cincinnati. Plus it’s got the R’nR HoF. That alone is worth the price of admission.

Never been to Cedar Point, though, in which case a summertime Cleveland Dopefest would be more up my alley. It’s quite a haul not to actually make a mini-vacation out of it. And every summer, I’ve considered taking my son to Canton to visit the Football HoF, but we’ve never made it.

In any case, I’d consider a Columbus Dopefest more reasonable for a day-trip.

How many southwestern Ohio dopers do we have here, anyway?

Van Wert, no kidding? I used to live there, and now I’m about 1/2 hr away in one of the small towns in Paulding County.

Here’s hoping you aren’t my husband’s ex-wife. :stuck_out_tongue:

You’re talking about my hometown here, but I haven’t been back since the mid-1970s. Back then, we went to Cleveland for fun, and the Cedar Point amusement park (Sandusky?) was an old-fashioned place back then, with wooden roller-coasters and funhouses. It’s still in business.

Pittsburgh’s got the Andy Warhol museum, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Fraid that’s it.

Whatever you do, don’t miss the Mesopotamia Dancing Girls.

Don’t worry, I am physically incapable of being anyone’s wife, ex or not. :stuck_out_tongue:

pesch, Not only is Cedar Point still in business, it is considered one of the best in the world, with some of the best rollercoasters in the world.

Lok

I live on Cleveland’s “East Side” - specifically, one of the older eastern suburbs. I moved here from KC a little over a year ago.

I’m a bit overwhelmed with places to explore; Cleveland, Akron, Canton, and Youngstown are all within a short drive of each other. Buffalo and Pittsburgh aren’t far away; both are fun destinations for road trips (Buffalo for the food and nightlife, and Pittsburgh for Ikea. ).

Can’t say much about Warren, since I haven’t explored that city yet. There are horror stories about the police there, though.
