Technically, while anyone can make up a fancy title for themselves under your name, being member gives you the further right to pay more money to be able to have that title show up.

Plus, all the free coffee you can steal.

I’m still new to the board, and I’ve tried to look for information on the difference between a “guest” and a “member,” but haven’t been able to figure it out. Perhaps someone can enlighten me?

First of all, you’ll have no ads. Some people complain about the occasional ad-born virus that attacks the board so it might be helpful to think of your subscription as protection money. Second, you’ll experience an overwhelming sense of moral superiority over your fellow, less charitable Dopers. I’m pretty sure as a guest you cannot do searches of the board. I am constantly doing searches to mine the wisdom of the teeming masses, and would find the board a lot less useful of I was unable to search. Easily worth the money.

Guests can use the search function, same as a paying member. There’s no point in doing so, since Google works better.

The day I bought my membership, I admit it: I cried just a little, knowing I would never experience that first time again. Since then it’s been a state of continuous, giddy ecstasy.
At least, it was until I started wondering what it felt like to be a Moderator.
