I'm no longer blacklisted!! (dog related)

I’m finally getting a puppy!!

Ok, trying to calm down to make this coherent. I started attending local Guide Dog meetings about 6 months ago, fully intending to raise a pup of my own. I did this because I care about the needs of the blind, but mostly because its the only way I can keep a dog in my apartment. After the required 3 meetings, I filled out an application for a puppy. And I waited…

… five months later I finally got to puppy-sit. I’d been trying for longer, but someone else would always beat me to it. Then I waited some more…

… after having been involved for 6 months, and knowing that others got a pup in 3-4 months, I started getting a little down on the whole thing. I felt like I’d been blacklisted or something.

At the last meeting I knew something was up. At Every. Single. Meeting. they would always think I was new, never remembered my name, etc. Last time, shortly after my arrival, one of the leaders offered to let me watch one of the career change dogs during the meeting. “Cool,” I thought, plus she’s remembered my name. After the talking part, the head leader walked up to me. “Hawksgirl, (yeah, she remembered my name suddenly too) when are you going to be ready for a puppy?” What? She acted like they were waiting on me or something. The whole thing was a little suspicious.

Today, while helping make music folders in the bandroom, the head leader calls me. She’ll be picking up 2 dogs for local raisers, and since there’s another one avaiable, did I want one while she was going to San Rafael anyway?

Um, YES!! :stuck_out_tongue: This is perfect. We have a few weeks to get use to our puppy before school starts, and work him into our routines and stuff.

All I know is that its a male black lab, about 8 weeks old, and his litter is in the O-series, so his name will start with the letter O. Plus, 2 pups in our local club will be his brothers! He’s going to be dropped off at my place on Sunday evening. I can’t wait!

Pics will follow puppy’s arrival of course!

Good on you! I wish that I could have the patience to even attempt that. I am proud for you too.
Now, give with the photos!

That’s great; I’m a puppy-sitter for Guide Dogs for the Blind. It’s lots of fun and I’ve learned a ton about dogs. I hope you enjoy your puppy.

By the way, if it’s approved by your Guide Dog organization, you might look into getting an empty heavy-duty plastic jug as a toy. We aren’t allowed to throw balls for the puppies but they love stomping on plastic jugs. (Get the really heavy-duty kind, not the little milk jugs). I’ve also had a lot of success entertaining them with tug toys.

I’m not a puppy-sitter. But I adopted a Black Lab (I hate to say I own him. It’s more like they own you.) He’ll steal your heart. Good luck. They are so earnest and eager to please. They’ll do anything for their master.

Why on earth not? Is it because they don’t want blind people throwing balls?

WAG: It’s so they never learn to associate “Barge off after that small moving thing!” with “Things my owner wants me to do.”

Bingo! Guide dogs with urges to chase small moving objects = bad.

It’s all about teaching them to focus on their work and not on distractions. If a person throws a ball near the blind person and the guide dog makes a beeline for it, it would endanger the person. Hence the restrictions.

Ah, I suppose that precludes a number of Monty Pythonesque pranks one could pull on the blind. Probably for the best.
