This question probably deserves a thread of its own, but all our homes have a “smell”, whether it’s cleaning fluids (like my daughter who walks around with Pledge on her hip), or beer, cigarette smoke, dog, cat, cabbage or whatever we fixed for dinner, or scented candles, or whatever we use with our hobbies, like glue, paint thinner, wood wax – I’ve never been in a house that didn’t have some kind of odor, pleasant or not.
The thing is, when you live with it, you don’t notice it unless something changes.
Hmm, I don’t know about that. I’ve had cats for the last 10 years and I’m very very sensitive to the smell of their urine. If you didn’t see my cats you’d never know I had them. I can smell if one of them shits outside of the box within two minutes of them doing it.
Maybe it’s because I have a sensitive sniffer or a low tolerance for animal smells, but it’s not just something I could accept as part of my home’s smell.
I’m sorry about your cat problems. I think getting him neutered is a good idea. It certainly couldn’t hurt anything and it might make the problem go away entirely. Good luck.
Nature’s Miracle is pretty good at getting the stink out. Unfortunately, it’s a bit of a scratch ‘n’ sniff search for where it’s coming from. But there’s no mistaking it when it’s around and it immediately gets a spritzin’.
I got another call from the vet with an update about his urine today. They said that they still haven’t found anything new (no crystal, a higher level of protein still there) and I explained to him a bit more of the behavior. He said that it might not be the testicles that are the issue as the cat is urinating instead of “spraying” (he meant that since he’s not doing it on walls/corners, he’s not typically “marking his territory”).
We’re going to get the cat neutered on Monday at a different vet (the one we go to is apparently very expensive at $235 for the operation.) The most recent vet said that sometimes their testicles don’t “pop out” until later and that might be why it’s been missed so far.
