I know it’s old. But I think it’s the second-best story of all the FF, barring number 6 with Kefka! who is completely cool. But the graphics in that game are way too primitive and hurt my eyes, after playing X & X-2.
But a thought occurs to me which for some reason never occured to me before.
Where does **Barret ** keep his ammunition? (For his gun arm?)
It’s best not to think too much about the mechanics of these games, or anything like that. If you’ve got some time to kill, start reading through this comic for the results of one man’s thinking.
I got nothing to say about the story of FF7, but the Playstation run of the series was definitely it’s low point. That’s partly because it followed the SNES run, but it’s because it added nothing new in terms of gameplay, focusing on the shiny 3D graphics. If you haven’t played any of 1-6, you owe it to yourself to check them out, and then grab a copy of The Legend of Dragoon.
Working my way through that one right now.
I never did finish 7. Got stuck (stupid me) at a part I can’t win, and can’t go back.
So I gave up.
I did however manage to finish FF Tactics, after about 7 years. Did it accidentally, too. I didn’t realize I was so near the end. And by that point I had been playing so long and was foolishly strong, so the final bad guy didn’t even get a hit in.
Oops.
Here is another comic about the fun of RPGs. It doesn’t have the best drawings (in fact, they really suck in the beginning), but I love the humor.
I love FF7, it was very immersive, which, as much as I like FF6, I can’t say the same about 6. Certain things just dropped me right out of the game (like dog boy).
If you do need help with FF7 or any FF game, please check out GameFAQs. They have all your needs for anything you might ever want to know and more about any of the games.
FF6 is my favourite video game of all time. I enjoyed 7, but I didn’t end up getting as emotionally invested in the characters, so it hasn’t had the same lasting impression on me.
Can somebody give me a breakdown of what I’d need to play FF4 and FF6? I’ve heard strange things about FF4 being something different in Japan, and FF3 being something else entirely, and I don’t even know if what I just said is correct. Were these all on the SNES/PS1?
FF4 and 6 were the numbers they were released by in Japan; a number of the Japanese FF games were not originally released in the US (2, 3, and 5, though 2 and 5 have since been released here as parts of PS1 compilations, but I digress), so in the U.S., you’re looking for Final Fantasies 2 and 3. They were both originally released in the US on the Super Nintendo - the graphics and such are thus what you’d expect of that era, with 2 coming early in the SNES run and 3 coming mid-late.
To play them legally, you’d need to get your hands on a working SNES and the carts of the two games. They are widely available over the internet via emulation, but I must stress that it is illegal to download any ROM files that you do not actually own the carts for.
Hoping I didn’t step over any lines with the brief summary of emulation,
Square put out FF compilations for the PS1 with these games on them. You’re looking for FF Chronicles and FF Anthology. Anthology has (Japanese) V and VI, and Chronicles has FF IV (Japanese) and Chrono Trigger.
These are legal to own and play, and if you have a PS1 or PS2 you already have the console. Chrono Trigger, by the way, is an EXCELLENT game, even though it’s rather old. It has a very rich story and gameplay.
I started to play Chrono Trigger for the first time about two weeks ago. I love the cheesy dialogue and characters, but I still don’t think it compares to FFVII which had me attatched to the characters about as much as a good movie.
So is Chrono Trigger part of the FF series? I understand that there is almost no overlap between FF games except for the ones with direct sequels. But Chrono Trigger (wasn’t there also some sort of Chrono Cross game or something too?) doesn’t even have FF in it, but it seems to be part of the anthology. And finally, just to complete my joyride on this hijacked thread, I thought FF was going back to Nintendo. Yet the GC only has Crystal Chronicles while PS2 still has FF X-2, and XI and I think XII? or so.
I’m a newcommer to the FF world and finally started playing this fall with 3/6, and loved it.
My roommate and I bought X-2, and… well, I’ll say no more about that.
We’re playing VII now. Unfortunately, the CD is scratched, and the game freezes when I try to progress beyond the point I’m at now (shortly before the world map is going to change, I believe). GAH!!! I want to see what’s going to happen next!
I’m playing Chrono Trigger now, and am enjoying it quite a bit. It took a while for me to get into the story, but now I’m hooked. Not quite as rich gameplay-wise as FF, though.
Where Chrono Trigger (and Chrono Cross, for that matter) really shines is being able to restart from the beginning with your last save. The game is really easy then, of course, but trying to get all the endings is fun.
Chrono Trigger has nothing to do with FF, and doesn’t have the same series style. It’s a littl funnier and probably even better. And once you start playing with time…
By the way, ROMS and EMULATORS (which are totally illegal and will get me banned if tell you how to get them or endorse getting them) are very easy to get online.
Or just get Final Fantasy Chronicles. Nothing quite like playing a 16-bit game on a 128-bit system. Unless it’s playing an 8-bit game (FFI, for example) on a 128-bit system.
Never played The Legend of the Dragoon but I have to agree that the SNES FFs were the best. I didn’t like any of the PSX ones at all but the 32 bit games were stellar.
Just wanted to say this is my favourite game, and I one day hope to have time to play it some day again.
(I’ve probably already played it too many times – I have half the dialogue memorized. I’d beat it three times before I found out about the different dates – my favourite being the date with Barrett. I’ve also watched enough anime to get the in-jokes and references, like the diver suit from Evangelion in Dio’s museum.)
My next goal is to play the games in order, but I’m only on FF4j/2e – Grad studies has gotten in the way, although I have a sneaking suspicion I learned more from Squaresoft than I am from any of the literary critics we’re studying.
I was also the very last to find out that they’ve made a sequel in a CG movie, which (if I understand correctly) will be available in March.
I really enjoyed Final Fantasy VII, even compared to the snes games. It just struck me as a bigger game. Lil bit more adult in tone, lil darker. And who can forget the chocobobreeding.
I also liked the materia system. It allowed characters to have different abilities as opposed to just having the thief and the black mage
The only problem I had was with the knights of the round summon. Beat the final boss way too easily.
I tried The Legend of Dragoon. Couldn’t get into it. A lot of the game seemed to be empty space. That’s just my humble opinion though.
