I'm reinstalling every program I had on my computer

And I mean every one. Starting with Windows (which, obviously, I’ve already reinstalled, but that’s where I started).

Computers make life so much nicer, until that Saturday when your hard drive decides not to work. At all. So it’s not just a few unreadable files here and there or anything. This is the world saying: “Good morning, your computer is making unpleasant beeping noises as it absolutely refuses to boot up, and now you get to wait until Tuesday evening for the replacement to get here. Then you will get to reinstall everything, absolutely everything. This will be complicated by the fact that the DSL modem in your home has also stopped working, and Verizon will be quite slow shipping you a new one, so you will have to go and sit at the library if you need to download anything which, oh, you certainly will.”

Frustrated? Me? Naaaaah.

So you just fire up Retrospect or Norton Ghost and “image” your new internal hard drive to match your nightly backup, right?

Right?

I really feel for you. I’m having computer problems myself. What you are experiencing is what I would define as an emerency and the only reason I’d reinstall my computer. Btw, do you know about the issues I’m having with accessing safe mode?

Yeah, it’s not frustrating…oh, after a few days, it’s not frustrating!

If your computer is beeping at you, it might be more than just the hard drive. Got some heart burn medication handy?

Yeah, it’s been a constant source of astonishment to me over the years how many otherwise careful people who wear seat belts, stop smoking, buy insurance, lock the door at night, don’t leave their keys in the car, etc, etc never ever seem to backup their computers on a regular basis. (how’s that for a runon sentence?)

Folks, unless you enjoy reinstalling everything, backup, backup, backup regularly!!!

coughcough
Um. Hey, look! Over there! A distraction!

At least I have learned my lesson in a very big way.

Mine died only last night. Thankfully, I had backed up about half of it…all the really important things, anyway. It’s had a lot of spyware, and we decided to just bite the bullet and re-install Windows.

The weird thing is, when it came back up, all my files were still there but I had to reinstall anything with an *exe. So for example, all the Sims 2 files are there but I have to reinstall Sims 2. Same with all my games. I have all my Excel/Word documents but I had to reinstall Office. Weird as hell.

hugs her backup drive anyway

“One should do so every year.”

So says my old IT teacher.
