The year: 1978. The movie: An Unmarried Woman (yeah, I know it’s not the most appropriate “valentine’s” movie around, but we watched it again last night anyway). The outrage: Jill Clayburgh’s stunning performance is overlooked by the academy, and Jane Fonda wins instead. Jill Clayburgh was raw, smart, wounded, inquisitive, loving, hating and brilliant.
I demand a re-count. Don’t give me that line about throwing out the ballots after 25 years. I want numbers, damn it!
And while we’re at it, I want a recount on that whole Annie Hall Best Picture thing. I saw that movie sitting forlornly in the $9.99 Already Picked Over DVD Rack and I thought, “Star Wars got shrugged off for this movie?”
Okay, okay, never mind. Star Wars didn’t deserve it that much. It bugs me to see the winning movie of 1977 sitting in the bargain bin.
