I wasn’t really expecting anything like that. I had confidence in my ability to complete the race. I just expected it to be tougher. I had done two 30-kilometer runs before and felt like death by the end of them (granted, on one it was hot like hell and on the other I had no liquid for the duration), and everyone kept saying that you have no idea what a marathon is like until you’ve done one, so I expected… something, you know?
Now I can’t even wrap my head around actually being a marathoner. It doesn’t feel like I did something that big. Of course, what that tells me is just that I could have run a hell of a lot faster, had I known my shape and had more routine (to know how much time I lost due to slower runners and water stops so I’d know how much I had to catch up), so that’s what I’m going to do. I love what the training has done to me and can’t see myself quitting it.
Why does that sound far more intense than the regular loss-of-big-toenails that plagues many runners (including me)…
“cleaned out”!
Well done!
Cheilectomy to remove bone spurs and such from a horribly arthritic “frozen” joint (hallux rigidus).
Most likely due to repeated hyperextension while grappling (BJJ).
A precursor to having a pin installed and the joint fused - most likely some time in the next 10 years.
But hyperextension - as in running - is the one activity that will hurt a lot, further deteriorate the joint, and speed up the need for the next surgery.
I miss running.
Elliptical machines and weights are SO BORING!
Congrats, Priceguy!
I’m afraid I may end up getting bitten by the marathon bug. I sort of hoped that my incipient crazy cat lady status would protect me, but no. Plus the kitties love to play with my dirty running socks. They throw them up in the air like mice and chase them all around the house.
