Last year the flood happened, the nests were destroyed and the birds left. I saw maybe four birds a day. In the fall some birds came back for the food, but in winter the songs are bleak and not melodious. They are plaintiff at best.
Spring is here now that the birds are. The snow doesn’t matter because I can listen to the songs through my cracked window. My favorite singers are the blackbirds. I’ve seen three pairs only, instead of the twenty normally here and nesting.
I can listen to the cranes at different times when they show up as a pair to wade the marsh and feed. I can hear them without them being in the marsh truthfully.
There is a large selection of singing birds having at it, and spring is sprung. Next come the frogs.
Our mockingbirds are back in tune with their amazing suite. Seems like every year someone will hear one for the first time and come in here asking “what in the world was that?”
My yard is claimed as part of a male cardinal’s turf each year, and hearing him sing each year heralds the coming of spring for my husband and I. This year I got a text from my husband; he’d stopped at home for lunch and heard the singing, and sent me the message, “The cardinal is here!” It made us both very happy.
There is a sandhill crane about 20 feet from the window. I don’t know if this one is without a mate or if the eggs were laid so they only hunt singularly at this time. Unless it’s migration time you only see family groups.
I haven’t seen my cardinal pair yet. I hope they come back again. I love those birds. I heard a bird singing the other day and wasn’t sure what it was (probably just a mocker) I used to know of a site with lots of bird songs on it but it’s not in my bookmarks. Anyone know of a good bird site with clips of bird songs?
I enjoy songbirds and can totally relate to the urge to procreate, but I’d appreciate it if they would do their “heybabylookatmeheybabylookatmeheybabylookatme” crap at a somewhat later hour than 4 freakin’ A.M.
At 5:33 am this morning, the birds in the tree outside of my bedroom window woke me. I laid there, just listening to them, appreciating the fact that they were back in the tree and making a ruckus because that means the weather is getting warmer. They’d been out there before this morning, but this morning was the first time I actually stopped to listen to them, know what I mean?
The goofy doves have been cooing outside my window for over a month now (stupid birds–there was SNOW on the ground!), but it’s nice to hear the song birds.
